14.5" x 2.5" curly Bigleaf maple platter. BLO and beeswax finish, not buffed yet.

The rim was fired (charred) for the color. It took awhile to get it right and the color even without over-burning.

Adam,

How were you able to get the nice, clean edge between the charred area and the natural wood. One of the guys in our club has been experimenting with this. Can't use masking tape! :)

Adam,

This looks fantastic to me! I like the look of the burned rim. I'm curious, does the finish seal that up so the black doesn't rub off on your hands?

Would also love to see the bottom of this!

Thanks for the pictures!

Harry,

I finish sanded the rim and rough sanded the inside of the bowl. Fired, which took about 30 minutes with a micro-torch. Have to go slow to avoid real burning, which would make low spots where the wood (fuel) goes away if it actually catches on fire.

After I was happy with the rim, I used a Sioux sander (clone) with 80 grit around the inside, which cleaned up any errors in burning. Then finish sanded from there.

Using a micro-torch is also the key....better control. Lowe's has them for about $8 and they run off butane.

As far as the carbon rubbing off, it seals fine. I sanded very lightly with 400 grit after burning to remove any excess prior to finishing.

Glad you liked it.

Very nice, Adam. I like the form, the contrast between the burned and unburned areas and the finish. Good job!:D

I loved this. Just great. I love curly maple and I love the contrasting rim. Makes me wonder why I'm wasting my time on the computer when it's obvious that I need to practice practice practice.

And add a $8 torch to my wish list...

I like it! How do you do the charing without charing past the edge? Doh! Never mind...should have read all of the posts first! I have wondered if those micro-torches were any good.

That is about as close to perfection as I can imagine. Very nice job.
