I was given these small logs for turning. Someone told me that it was cherry laurel. The main trunk of this tree is pretty much straight up and about 50-60 foot tall. From what I've read on the internet, cherry laurel doesn't grow that tall and is more of a bush. Then I was told it could be a Carolina laurel. Can someone identify this by the pictures. The tree had no leaves so I don't have anything to id from that. The tree is in the Southwestern part of Georgia.
If it is in the laurel family, is it safe to turn? I've read that laurel is toxic.
If anyone can identify, please help.
Thanks,
Steve

It's black cherry, aka just regular old "cherry."

The dark spot in the middle is probably decay.
