I was just in the garage shop saw my curly maple boards on the wall lumber rack.

I have two 1 7'8"x 4 1/2' X 24" long boards, one 3/4"X7"X48" long. They are s4s.

I have hand tools and also full shop of power tools. I don't have a lathe, but I have whittled rounds before,
You make a 12 sided stick and draw knife it.

Any thoughts on a possible project will be appreciated. Maybe a box for swmbo or something. Or a knife kit.

Maybe a simple little table?

Instead of Pine, make it out of Maple...

I like small tables, that is a thought. I also have some mesquite. I could mix the two. It might be interesting.
I made the Brazos Rocker using mesquite. Maybe the table could sit beside the chair.

Google Brazos Rocker, it is a Paul Sellers design.

Top is 3/4 x 18 x 24". Aprons are 3" wide. Legs are 1-1/2"x1-1/2" x 25. Mortise & Tenon to connect the legs to the aprons....corner blocks to attach the top....depending on glue-up times,,,maybe a weekend's work? You could even "milk it" out to about a week....

Do you have a band saw to resaw them, jointer, planer, table saw or just the power hand tools? Curly maple would make a beautiful jewelry box.

Actually, I have all the tools you mentioned. I just need to start something. I made a Windsor chair one time at a Homestead Heritage class. I have made rocking chairs for all of my children and also a couple of friends. I need to re-paint the chair and I have black milk paint.

I'm assuming you've asked your wife what she might have in mind. You might also consider support equipment for your projects, such as a hand carry tool box, saw horses, storage racks (wall mounted or portable) for your clamps & other tools, fixtures for your table saw. band saw, router, sled for the TS, router, etc. These would be made from plywood, MDF which is flat & stable, etc., not from curly maple.

Picture frames for 8" x 10" photos. Nice objects to have on hand when the inevitable time comes to share a special photo down the road.

Maybe a pedestal cake holder could be useful. Happy Birthday Lowell.

By the time you finish asking the wife that question, you will have a list as long as your arm.

Lowell - I was also born in a small town in Oklahoma - Seminole. I moved East to find work over 30 years ago. My avatar picture is my great grandfather who was a Conductor on the Rock Island Line that used to run through Oklahoma City, Shawnee, Seminole, Holdenville, and on to Little Rock and Memphis.

You have enough lumber there to make a jewelry box - which will show off the nice grain of the curly maple. You'll need to resaw the smaller board to get enough stock for the lid. Lots of possibilities there!

Enjoy!

I use a lot of figured woods. I rarely make an entire piece out of figured woods. they can look spectacular to wood addicts like myself.

Not my table . . .
387587

but, on larger scale pieces can overpower the typical client. Projects on my list of things I probably won't build unless someone asks me to since I don't have the room are:

Chimney cupboard - probably not a good choice for this material.
Hallway table - definitely some opportunity there.

I find figured maple as an accent on picture frames to get a very good response. The amount you have could supply your family and your extended family.

Either of you two remember the reasons for that angled fence?

Photo was taken where the D,T & I crossed St Rt 47 in Ohio.....Maplewood, OH is about 2 miles to the north of this spot....the crew is facing south. Marion Lewis Newman is on the right, and two of his brothers are also on the cart. Not sure about the short fellow...Grandpa lew was over 6'2".....when he was killed, he was a section Foreman. They replace the pumper with gas driven carts....he was trying to get his started that morning...it finally did "catch", and shot across the diamond at Morgan Tower, in Quincy, OH.....a Passenger train from Sidney, OH was also starting across the diamond....and was doing about 85mph....

I like how you make it sound so easy ;)

...I have the sudden urge to learn to build and play a guitar. Not sure which should come first.

Set your sights towards the less common: https://www.amazon.com/Music-Wood-Cornelia-Cornelissen/dp/0385311672

After reading this I really, really wanted to build a cello. The book comes with a CD of the guy playing the instrument he made.

I had an Uncle that lived in Seminole. IIRC, he coached a amateur baseball team. I think they approached skill levels of professionals.
