Finishing a burl

I found a large burl in an abandoned wood pile. It has the birch tree running right down the center. The whole thing is about 24 inches across. I’m a wood lover with little experience but want to de bark and sand the whole thing before I decide if and where to cut. Any suggestions?? I’m thinking about using a Dremel .....

Break off a little edge piece that won't stay on through machining. Sand it smooth and then put a few stains and finishes on to get an idea of what you have.
