Hit & Miss most of the day....found a few "gems" .....3 Cresent "water pump pliers" $1 each. ( can never find mine WHEN I need it) Turned down a 7-1/4" B&D all steel circular saw...even at $5...cost more to replace the dry rotted rubber coated cord...

Stopped another place...inside the shack was a tub of 8 braces....all over priced...walked out back to the "yard sale" area he had...there laying on the table ( and for who knows how long in the weather) was this $4 brace

Walked back through the shack..and found this $2 item..

Handed the fellow $6, and called it good...

The Brace?

Stanley No. 945, 8". Needed a bit of 3in1 oil in all the right places...

Springs are still in the chuck, BTW. Worked the oil into the joints, and it worked like new...handles got a coat of an oil stain...
Liked like one of my other braces..

Because i have it's 10" big brother...:D
as for that mushroom..

Need to yank the wooden plug out, and fit a new handle...
Socket is stamped:
DEFIANCE by STANLEY
No. 1251
Made in USA
And it 1-1/2" wide...
It does have a "back-bevel"

AND, IF you look closely, you can see the edge is not straight...more of a reverse camber...corners stick out more that the middle.
Bevel side has two bevels....
Not too bad a day..not great, just ...so-so...

Not sure about the age of the brace....chisel seems to be from the 1930s. The 1950 era Defiance chisels would have had plastic handles. Just before they were branded as Handyman chisels..

Have cleaned up the mushroomed end, and removed the wooden plug.....drill bit also removed the lip around the inside of the socket, caused by the mushroom..

Handle blank was fine-tuned for a fit...

And given a coat of stain....still need to sharpen the edge.....until then, it can sit here..
387074
Will be using that mallet on it, once the edge is sharpened up...$2 chisel.

Intend to grind things back a bit.....back was already flat, except right at the edge....witll get rid of that little "back bevel" and straighten the edge.....new bevel on the "bevel" side will be flat...depends whether it be at 20 degrees or 25? Intend to pare with it, rather than chop.....might come in handy?
