The "Miss" is because I just missed a pair of 3/4" pipe clamps with 6' pipes....:(

Spent about four hours today, with the Boss, and the Grandson, driving around finding sales...some listed, some not.....nose started itching at two of the sales...first sale
386546
They wanted $10 for just the box....got saw and all for $7....Boss was finding a few items, so was the Grandson...drove around a bit more, there went the nose again...walked around the sale twice...
386548
fellow wanted $5 for it..had a big handful of change in my pocket.....he said "Close enough!"...who am I to argue?
386549
Millers Falls No. 14...for about $1.35 in change?

Was getting way too hot...T & T said it was 84 degrees outside...time to head home to the A/C....
Not too bad of a day?

jack plane turned out to be a Millers Falls No. 14, Type 3.....1941-1949....have manged to get it torn down and cleaned up.

Thinking it may be closer to 1941.....adjuster wheel is brass. Traces of red paint on the lever cap's logo.

Took the plane apart, only to find out the chipbreaker was on the logo side of the iron....sitting right on the bevel.....

Checked the whole plane over...haven't found any sign of cracks, even in the hardwood handles. might have been used one or two times, then sat on a shelf...had to evict quite a few spiders, and their nests..

Mitre box....it is a two piece thing...you attach the two back halves to a wood base...using a bunch of screws. If the board warps...get a new board. It does have some rubber feet, though.
Saw has "Popular Mechanics" silk-screened onto the plate. One screw was loose...meh, no biggie. Will try to clean the plate up, later. Seems to be fairly sharp...no missing teeth. We'll see. Would be a lightweight, travel to jobsite type saw...

Sounds like a very successful day of rust hunting. I am a fan of Millers Falls planes. I prefer them to Stanley when I can find them - which is never.

Pictures, so far..
386587
What I got, while getting a soak, and what it should look like when done
386588
Logo side of iron,,,chipbreaker was on bevel side?
386589
After most of the parts had been wire wheeled clean...
386590
Sole ( and the sides) after a clean up. Compare to..
386591
Sole was actually flat, just dirty...almost as much as topside..
386592
Hmmm, wasn't there a TV show about "Dirty Jobs"?
386593
Think this qualifies...
BRB..

Lever cap had traces of red paint, so..
386594
Called "Cardinal Red"" for scratch repair. You "flood" the logo, let it dry, then buff away the excess...frog was missing a lot of it's red, as well..
386595
Which left the handles. Millers Falls went with a Stained Hardwood, during the war years...so, after stripping off what remained of the flaky, old finish...
386596
Should be close enough, after a varnish coat...
Jig is out, for sharpening the iron..if needed..
386597
It was already hollow ground by someone else....Back has been flattened,,,just needs to be on the correct side of the iron.

Handle bolts WERE blued, by Millers Falls...rust had removed some, clean up got the rest....may go back to a blued finish...

With a little luck, today, I may have this jack plane back to like new...then I can work on that mitre box and saw...

Paint has dried...and been cleaned up..
386614
Sitting beside it's younger relative...
386615
Shavings aren't too bad...for a Jack plane..
386616
soles.....
386617
Might just be worth that price I paid for it? $1.35?
386618
Seems to fit right in...newer ones tended to have fancier handles..
386619
Nice little groupl...there is still another #9 in the til...

Just curious …

Did you paint with japan or automotive paint?
I have used the latter.

Gave the mitre box and saw a short test drive today...to see what all it needs
386699
Needs a new deck..this ones bows down in the middle
Saw will need a sharpening...It does cut, but about half the speed of my other mitre saws.

Have a chunk of 2 x 10 in the shop...a cutoff from that bed build....may make that into a new deck.
