I know I posted about the other planes, but I forgot to mention the Stanley No. 12 I picked up for $40. It is in fantastic shape! I read that there weren't really identifiers to show variations as once the design was out, it was a good one that didn't need to be changed. Mine does have an "81" stamped behind the blade...not really stamped, as they are raised numerals. Any ideas as to what it may signify or a way to date this beauty?

Hi Scott,

It is always helpful to post images of any tool when you want to determine its time of manufacture.

On the #12 the two angle adjuster nuts change over time. Trade marks on the blade and the cap screw can help to put a date on the plane.

The "81" on your plane is likely a foundry or mold ID number.

I posted this through my phone and didn't see any options to add a picture. I will try to get one tomorrow.
