Hello everyone. What type of wood are standard 2x4's made from? Is it a pine?
I have access to a great deal of this wood but was wondering if it is worth ripping and using in projects.
Your input is appreciated.

Ken - I am assuming you are referring to construction 2 x 4 and I have seen them in pine and spruce. I have also seen them in fir but this has been rare in the southeast.

That is correct Steve, construction type lumber.

Normally SPF is stamped on 2x4's, etc.
Spruce, Pine, Fur.

Remember that construction grade lumber is often pretty wet and will shrink as it dries.
Here in California, it is usually fir.

In Ontario, the big box stores also stamp the construction wood SPF (spruce, pine, fur). But, everything that I have ever bought stamped that way (and I have bought a lot), has been spruce.
