Several folks here helped me out with this when I started rough turning it last year. A buddy who mills logs on the side had a huge walnut tree with the root ball still intact, he gave me dibs on the ball. I still have 4-5 roughed out bowls ready for finishing from that root.

I rough turned this 16" platter but by the time I could get it flat it was only 1" thick. I wasn't sure how much it would warp and if I would lose a ton of width by the time it dried. I wrapped it with plastic wrap but after a few weeks it was obvious it was going to move a lot, the rim started to split, so I chucked it back up and just finished turned it to about 1/4"-3/8" thick at the rim. I filled the cracks with black tinted epoxy, let it warp and it sits on our mantle now as a display piece as its too wonky to be functional.

I put an ogee on the underside, it's pretty funny looking now with the warping.

Finished with polymerized tung oil.

Thanks. This is probably my favorite piece I’ve turned so far.
