Y'all ever have small interactions with neighbors that just kinda make you wonder if they're ok in the head? Yesterday, on my way home from work I was flagged down by a big truck. He began to inquire as to whether or not I saw his two dogs running around with their leash still on. I told him I was unsure if it had a leash, but I saw a medium build dog near the entrance that was roaming and asked if it was sort of greyish blue, he not only said yes, but very enthusiastically. I told him I thought it was a good looking dog from what I saw, and told him how fond of Pit Bulls I am, to which he dropped his head and said, "Oh, that's not mine then, I'm looking for my Lab and Aussie". "Oh.. what kinda Lab?" "Yellow."
... I just drove off.
Anyone else got any weird neighbor stories? I have plenty :D

The Aussie was probably a blue merle. They are grayish/blue.

You know, I considered that after I drove off. I later saw him with what I assume were the lost dogs, a yellow lab, and a border collie. Whether he has an Aussie as well, I don't know, but I used to breed Aussies on the farm, that was no Aussie. Wasn't greyish blue either but I'm past trying to find the logic.

When I was a kid, my best friend and I both suffered really bad from sleep insomnia(still do, but I'm medicating now) so we would often roam our neighborhood from 11-whenever, sometimes till day break. Anyhow, one night while wandering, this lady was walking and stopped to talk to us. Saying she used to babysit us when our parents were busy and how much we've grown, all while making strange ticks and paranoid twitches. Asked us for cigarettes like 6 times. Asked if we could "hook her up". Few years ago, her house got busted for meth.

I bought 1880's duplex to rehab 35 years ago. It was on a lake in an upscale neighborhood surrounded by expensive restored single family homes. The day I moved in my 70 year old neighbor Ruth walked over to me in my yard. After a normal introduction she said "what's your plan for the property?" I said to slowly restore it as I can afford it. I was 30 at the time and she must have thought I was a young whippersnapper. She said "you can't use it as duplex because it's zoned single family". I politely explained the grandfather laws and that it's been a duplex for 45 years. Ruth clearly stated she wanted to get her way.

A year later I was in court fighting Ruth. I won.

Over the years Ruth did everything she could to make life miserable for me and my tenants. Many of her actions were pitiful and mean, but I did my best to ignore her. Ruth called the city on me so often they must have gotten sick of her too.

She watched me like a hawk. The funniest time was when I was installing blinds on all the windows that faced her house. I was in my house walking around with my tool belt on and heard the doorbell. It was the city inspector. He said "we have a report that your doing work without a permit". I said you caught me installing blinds without a permit! He wanted to come in and inspect because that's what inspectors do. He rolled his eyes, apologized and left.

As Ruth got older she would be civil occasionally, but usually had to follow up with spite. One day me and a buddy were windsurfing from my shoreline. Ruth walked over in a swimsuit and said "I love watching you guys, it's such a beautiful sport". I said thanks. Then she walked out to knee deep water. I sailed away. Then Ruth looked me in the eye and darted into my path in the water as fast as her old body could move. She was yelling "your going to hit me, your trying to hurt me!" I was 25' feet away from her the whole time. Looking back on it maybe she had dementia.

I learned a lot from my experiences with Ruth. Learning to live with others is a fascinating adventure.

When I was a teen we had a nutty neighbor. Actually we had interesting neighbors all around, and we had a lot of contact because of how the houses were unusually arranged. But anyway, the one crazy neighbor had never really talked to us until she came to ask my dad if they could put in a gate that would open onto our driveway, and use it to get cars in/out of their back yard. (Again, unusual arrangement, we were behind the house closest to the street, with a very long driveway.) My dad said yes IF they put in a proper ramp or protection to keep from breaking up the driveway edge when they drive on/off of it. She flipped out. Started calling him and us names, and screaming about how unreasonable we are. Said that she would call the cops, sue us, she has a right, etc etc.

A few weeks later, there's a gate. Ok. Dad takes some spare concrete blocks and builds a barrier on OUR driveway. Now the lady comes over REALLY going off. My dad tells her to never come back, or he's calling the cops. A few days later some of the blocks are broken off. Dad puts them back, fills them, and for good measure, installs a piece of leftover chain link fence.

My brother still lives in that house and about once a year she goes off on some nutty thing or another. Apparently she has spent time locked up for schizophrenia, but is currently supposedly able to live in society. Her ongoing craziness for a few years has been to leave her trash cans in the street so nobody can park there when they visit my brother.

Once years ago when my brother and I raced off road as a team we had arrived back home and went to the pub to watch the race on Speedvision, being racers that could not afford cable. So we are watching and there is a fellow we knew sitting at the bar watching with us, and he asks.........

In my case it may have always been me as the weirdo neighbor.

We used to live on a court in a residential area and had corn growing in our front yard because the back yard didn't get as much sun.

For a while we kept a goat, then muscovy ducks. They really aren't ducks, they just look a lot like ducks.

One family moved in next door and they were a rather extended family that felt it was okay to block other folks driveways and have people sleeping in cars at night. That was one of our main incentives for moving away upon my retirement. We sold that house last November.

I have roommates / tenants. My house is zoned as single family, but really the house is a duplex. I rent it to my friends as a duplex. The driveway is narrow, so I get the driveway and the couple downstairs parks their cars on the street.

I came home to a city warning that was filed by an anonymous neighbor. It basically amounted to someone being angry with the parking situation, but using other reasons to get their point across. So, I'm totally legal because I meet the X amt of strangers allowed in a single family home zoning rule.

However, since they filed the complaint anonymously, I have no idea which neighbor we are pissing off. Therefore, I can take no corrective action. City doesn't care where on the street anyone parks eitiher. Moral of story: Just communicate.

Years ago we bought a large boat that needed a bunch of work. We towed it home from far away, and arrived on a Friday. My intention was to book a storage space first thing Monday and move it there, since obviously it wouldn't be legal to leave it parked in my driveway/yard. Early on Saturday morning, a neighbor a few houses away comes over SCREAMING straight off about how the boat can't be there, and she's already called the police and the city, and we're horrible people and more and more and more. I mean, she ranted about the previous tenants, who apparently were pigs, and mixed us into that somehow.

I laughed. She asked me when I was going to move the boat, and as I took a breath to answer, she started the tirade again saying it must be moved today. I laughed, and ducked down into the bilge again. I didn't actually get one word out.

She somehow got a city inspector to come out on Sunday morning. He was not happy with her. He said that it was actually perfectly legal to leave the boat there as long as we wanted, except that I had to move it forward a foot because one tire was in the yard. The only legal requirement was that all tires be on pavement. The boat could overhang (and it did, a lot) but the tires just had to be off the yard. I did that, and then left the boat there for many weeks. She'd walk by and stand on the sidewalk with hands on her hips and shaking her head. It sure was convenient to do work on it at home when I had some random free time instead of driving somewhere to do it. I would just smile and wave.

Most of these stories sound like neighbors that are retired and bored. Nothing more fun than yelling at younger folks for imagined issues. If I ever get bored with woodworking maybe I'll try yelling at my neighbors.

A couple of years ago we had a pretty strong wind storm. My neighbor gets on top of his house, a tall two story house, with his electric blower to clean off a few small branches that were on the shingles. To me, that is a little bit to anal retentive. He has five or six 50 - 60' tall cottonwood trees, so these were the small branches with 5 - 20 leaves on each one. If he had given it a few days they would have blown off by themselves. He was so meticulous about getting every single leaf off his roof. That was a little strange in my opinion.

The flip side is that I think of antics I pulled as a kid, and well, suffice it to say, I and my brother/cousins were pretty much hoodlums back in the day. And today, I do things that are deliberately strange just to annoy/puzzle a different neighbor who is the only one that can see into my back yard. Like opening up a 12' ladder in the middle of the yard for no good reason and leaving it sit there for a week. At least some 'strange behavior' is other's way of playing with our minds.

When I first moved in the next door neighbor that moved in about a month before me came over and demanded that I sell him half of my lot so no one could build on it. He was a real pain trying to sue everybody. This was 40 years ago and I see he is still at the sue game only in the city.

Dont know about Carlos' case, obviously. But some places Stateside have deed restrictions or even laws "intended" to keep the neighborhood or city looking nice. Like a lot of things, these can get carried away or have unintended consequences. (And they can be very controversial. Lotta guys here said in a previous thread they refused to live in such neighborhoods or cities.) My neighbor had a boat in his driveway and the neighborhood association made him put it in his backyard behind a tall fence.

I could write a book. Around the farm, we have 17 adjoining property owners. Most with 1 acre parcels that were cut off from the farm 35 yrs ago. Caught a kid riding his dirt bike in my hay field, tearing things up. Stopped him and escorted the 14 yr old home. Spoke to his father about it, the father said, " Geesh it is just a field. Where is he supposed to ride?" I bought a 7 acre adjoining lot in late May, crops reserved until the end of the season. It was corn. Within a week, the neighbor's kid started riding the lawn tractor across the lot, tearing up and smashing all the corn seedlings. So I call the farmer that owned the crops and the kid got charged and convicted of agricultural vandalism. After the corn was harvested, I had the lot surveyed and then started putting up pasture fence, starting with the posts. Along one particular neighbor, the posts disappeared one night. Put some of the posts back and the neighbor's boyfriend shows up and just walks out into my new pasture and points at the ground and claims the survey pin was 40 feet further into the pasture than it actually was. Police get called. Cops show up and start talking about charging me with trespassing. I take the police officer over and show the officer where the survey corner pin is complete with the surveyor's cap. The neighbor comes out and tells the cops that she watched me put that in that morning. Then i point out that the line for the back of all of the subdivided off lots is a straight line that goes on for 6 lots and houses. Then she tells the cop she bought the property privately from Mr. X the previous owner, but she never got the deed from his attorney. I then point out that that her lot was sold to her by the estate of Mr X, so he had died before she even bought her lot. I pulled out a copy of her deed and showed the cop that the estate was the seller. The police officer then announces that it is a civil matter for attorney's to straighten out. That afternoon, the her kid starts oiling rocks in the "disputed territory" and a week later, Her boyfriend puts up a fence out to where they claim she bought. I filed suit against her and she never answered, so I got a default judgment against her, waited until the appeal month ran, and then backed up the tractor and pulled out her fence. I then used the front end loader to push all the debris onto her yard. Cops show up again. This time I have a court order that the property is mine. Her boy friend shows up and challenges me to a fight to settle it like real men. I found out a week earlier that he is a police officer in a nearby city. So I definitely decline the invitation. I get my fence put up and one day, I find a pipe exposed after the animals nibbled down the grass. But this is in another place. It had obviously been there for some time. I go to the county farm agency and start looking at the annual aerial photos. The neighbor apparently ran a drain pipe from her garage out under ground into my pasture. I found an aerial picture from 11 years earlier that shows a line of disturbed soil/grass across her lawn. So I got a copy of the picture and stopped for a bag of sakrete on the way home. I shoved a pound of frozen beef liver into the pipe and then sealed it shut with concrete. Noticed her garage door open a few days later. Seems it was open for a few weeks. A year later, I noticed her kid was washing something on the garage floor. Within an hour or two, I saw hem using a push broom to push soapy water out of the garage onto the driveway. Trash and small car parts start showing up in my pasture but only along that line. One night the kid gets drunk and backs his car through my fence. I called the police and he ended up in violation of probation for an earlier DUI and gets another three months in the county hotel. My mail box gets shot up, somebody keeps dropping wire on my electric strands to short out the fence., and then one night, about 4 am I hear a terrible clanging noise and the stock is just all upset running wildly across the pasture. So I go out, grab my wife's horse and walk the horse keeping the horse between me and the noise. As we get closer, I can hear the neighbor woman cussing and carrying on. She is holding a piece of metal against my fence and hitting the metal with a hammer. At this point I am about twenty feet away and I shine the flash light on her. The crazy woman collapses. I call an ambulance and they take her to the hospital. She had a lawn mower blade and a hammer and was apparently trying to cut my fence. She gets hauled away to the hospital and I figured I better get a camera and take pictures. Sure enough, I get a call from the county detective that she is claiming I tried to scare her to death. I sent him a copy of the pictures of the hammer, blade and bent up fence. Never hear from him again. Neighbor puts house up for sale and moves. YEAH!

There's a reason we keep moving farther and farther away from civilization because we want nothing to do with crazy people. We've had our run-ins over the years with the insane, but because we keep leaving high population centers for low ones, it isn't that big of a deal.

So yesterday, I walk up to get the mail right, and there was a bunch of it. Like, a BUNCH of mail. After I get back inside I start to sort it and turns out most of it was my neighbors. So, it being illegal to open someone else's mailbox, I decided to walk it over and give it to em. Some things were marked urgent, and there was even a package. So I get to their door right, and as soon as I knock I hear the TV cut out, and someone yells "Go away!". I tried to explain that I was just dropping some mail that was accidentally put in my box and that I'd put it on the porch, to which he replied: "I said go away or I'll call the police!". Guess I'll just drop all their stuff at the foot of their mailbox next time. Rude.

In the "old" days it was apparently common to run a separate drain for "grey" water from the sinks to keep it out of the septic systems. When I bought this farm I found two such drain pipes from neighbor's properties. I talked to them and one rerouted the drain to into the septic system and the other decided to put in an entirely new septic system.

It's nice to have good neighbors who watch out for each other. I make a point to take honey and eggs to neighbors.

To me its a matter of perspective yours vs theirs. Perhaps they see something about you that you have never realized? :D

House next door is built inside the zoning minimum setback limit at 4 feet from the property line, except for a chimney that sticks out about 2.5 feet. My lot is fenced. On his side of the fence is a very nice, mature, 7 or 8 foot high privet hedge. His lot on the other side has a nice wide setback from the adjacent lot, about 20 feet. His wife demands a new kitchen, so they get a zoning variance to build within 2 feet of the property line over there. Then he realizes that his lawn service can't get into the back yard any more. Oops!

But that's no problem, he thinks: he decides to use a gate in my fence that accesses his back yard and allow him and his lawn service, etc. to use my driveway to get to his back yard. No discussion with me.

So one fine day, I've got a project in my garage and park blocking access to the gate. A couple of days later, I get a lawyer letter threatening to sue if I obstruct his access to his back yard over my property, claiming a right by adverse possession and/or an easement. I immediately parked my truck blocking the gate and arranged for my lawyer to reply: bring it on, dude! Arranged for my lawyer to attach an aerial view of his place before and after the kitchen addition, showing the paved pathway into his back yard before and the kitchen after.

He may be a weird neighbor, but he isn't stupid. After six weeks of letting my truck sit there, he had his lawyer send a letter of apology with a humble request to negotiate terms for using my driveway and the gate, by appointment, for yard workers. I agreed and allowed an appointment every time they asked until we sold the place in 2009 (just in the nick of time to miss the big crash).

4' setback??? Around here it is 30' in the front, 10' for a rear property line. Maybe we have more space in this part of the country.

I read through the rules and talked to people about their experiences, and it was very low impact. Meanwhile however our roads and parks are privately maintained by our HOA, and they are *perfect* while the city park nearby is a broken down mess with dead grass. Our streets have been refinished once already in the six years we've been here, while the city road just outside our area is a disaster. The area has super low crime and we can walk/bike right out into the desert 100 yards away. Yeah, so I can't leave my motorhome parked out front for more than one day at a time (to load, then to unload), and can't leave junk out front. And if you do, you get a 14 day warning, so plenty of time to correct things or talk to the HOA. I just needed to leave pallets of material out front for a month, they said no problem and thanks for asking.

Naah! That was the side setback. He was inside the setback area of 6 feet via a zoning variance. If he'd had the six feet of the code, there would have been room for a walk-way, but nooooo!

Nope, HOAs are a complete deal breaker for me. They could be giving houses away and I'd turn it down over an HOA. But here, the city does pretty much everything I could ever want. They paved our street a week after we moved in. In fact, they've paved almost every street in the city in the past 2 years. We get free trash pickup where you can put anything out twice a year and they come by and grab it from you, no matter what it is. It's nice and nobody sticks their nose into your business.

I don’t know, I always felt the same way about Hoa’s.

But the older I get the less patients I have for dealing with others crap. I have neighbors whom nearly could care less how they affect those around them and it just seems to get worse every year. Last night I had a a neighbor out on their deck partying till 1am. Like hooting and hollering at the top of their lungs infants running around screaming crying.

Add to that neighbors whom lean their carpa against my fence on their side. Have massive driveways but still park up on their lawn as they are to a yard to walk the 150ft. Never cut their lawns, let thire yard leaves blow all over every fall. Let their dogs run free, the list goes on and on and on.

And dare you say something, anything you are a hole and they begrudge you and double down.

I’m thinking a Hoa and someone to meditate the riff raff and make sure we are all acting like responsible human beings sounds pretty good.

Nope, HOAs are a complete deal breaker for me. They could be giving houses away and I'd turn it down over an HOA. But here, the city does pretty much everything I could ever want. They paved our street a week after we moved in. In fact, they've paved almost every street in the city in the past 2 years. We get free trash pickup where you can put anything out twice a year and they come by and grab it from you, no matter what it is. It's nice and nobody sticks their nose into your business.

Our HOA consists of my Lovely Bride and myself but she gets two votes.

We are on 27 acres with woods on 90% of the perimeter, everywhere except the county road frontage and I've been growing green screens there. The shop, barn, and some outbuildings are by the front fields a little closer to the neighbors than the house but I can live with that. An electric gate eliminates product and other salesmen. Security cameras give peace of mind.

I mostly have to listen to the awful owls and crows and my chickens and guineas and peacocks and equines and an occasional buck snort. The view from the house is down the long field with the horses.

Too funny. My place is 115 acres in the middle of no where. Closest neighbor is a little under a mile away on the road. Driveway in from the gate to the house is four tenths of a mile. We are on a ridge looks similar to your place. View is about 25-30 miles when the weather cooperates. Property is surrounded on all sides by about 10,000 acres of private and publicly owned land. Needless to say its very quiet. You can usually hear someone coming at least 30 minutes before they are at the door either by vehicle, 4 wheeler, or side-by-side. Someone on horseback or on foot can catch you by surprise.

Its a life that can either make you a reclusive isolationist lol.. or desperate for someone to come through the gate heheh.

We have no HOA and I personally maintain the road down to the hard road (if you could call it that).

Once, nearly 20 years ago when we bought the property, the UPS driver made it all the way to the house and needless to say he was out of his mind pissed off. I had to remind him that I had a UPS calendar in my shop that had a picture of a UPS delivery man delivering a package to an Eskimo lol. All packages are delivered to the business but at the time it was funny.

I lived for many years on 16 acres and my closest neighbor was a mile away and they likely lived on about 10 acres. It was nice, you didn't have to worry about people looking over your fence or getting in your business. Now, I have a 3 acre lot like most other people and people know enough to mind their own business. So long as you do what you're supposed to do, nobody really cares. That's how I like it.

Yes, we have the best rainbows looking to the east from the deck in the evening when weather/rain moves east with clear sky and sun behind, low in the west.

Here's another one. Now I know exactly where to dig for that pot o' gold - under the beehives. Wait, maybe the rainbow is pointing to the honey...

This one shows the supernumerary arcs, the reason for the lighter area inside the primary and outside the secondary bows. Imagine an infinite number of arcs, each closer to the previous one as you look towards the center. The OR Lab director at the time, whose hobby and passion and the topic of his favorite technical talk is the science behind rainbows, told me this was the best photo of the arcs he had seen. I did some simple contrast adjustment to the photo to show them better. Google images shows a bunch, some optical simulations.

I remember going to a lumber and supply company once where the sales people,yard help ,and customers were usually pretty grumpy and surly. A rainbow formed right over the place and changed it to a bunch of happy friendly people for about a half hour.

Notice the color reversal on each rainbow.. Most I have seen was five with the lower two complete. this was in summer Alaska.

Where I live is being overrun in cheap tract homes, so to mess with the real estate agents, got some ugly pink and purple paint samples and applied it to the siding of my moms old house although the siding was torn off & hauled off to the dump did save that one piece to draw it out more, have told my neighbors next door that have no intention of painting the house those colors, it's going to be gray we all had a laugh, & my neighbors are great BTW.

Those cheap quality homes start at $340K, others $499K.

I used to have a problem with people trespassing in my hay pasture.

While talking with the parents of the worst offender one day they asked me about my backhoe. My response was that "it's a great backhoe. It will dig to 19' but the County's will only dig to 16'. The look on their face was priceless when they figured out the meaning of that statement.

Never had much trespassing problems after the sign went up. :D.
