I find music to be an excellent form of expression. Sometimes when listening to music there are particular lyrics that strike home for me. While reflecting over a few lines today, it got me thinking, what are some songs or lyrics that have really cemented themselves in your brain? I'll start with a few:
"Morals are simply a matter of time, and where you lay 'em that's a question of pride"

"Though it may haunt us, and break our hearts, death cannot tear us apart"

Anyone care to add to this? I plan on listening to any I don't recognize. I love experiencing new music!

Maybe this one would be forum appropriate:

"Fixing a hole in the ocean
Trying to make a dovetail joint, yeah
Looking through a glass onion....."

Sorry - "Glass Onion" (The Beatles, White Album)
Awesome song.
John Lennon wrote it as a way of mocking those fans that were reading too much into Beatles lyrics and album art. He thought it got out of control, and the song basically makes fun of them.
Now the term Glass Onion is a euphemism for reading too much into any particular thing be it a movie, politics, etc. Sometimes things are just as simple as they appear, even though we might want there to be a more complicated story behind them. Then again, I suppose art can have whatever meaning attached to it that the viewer chooses to attach.

The remix they did for the Beatles Love soundtrack is really good also, but not a replacement for the original song.

Oh no way! I remember that song now. It had all the so-called song experts perplexed trying to discover what the meaning behind their songs was. Man, what I would give to have been around for The Beetles touring days!

"The Lost Boy"
Greg Holden

I will not be commanded
I will not be controlled
I will not let my future go on
Without the help of my soul

"Mystic"

And if I don't believe, what does that mean
And when I die alone, who will eat my soul
In the cave of god, while the Angel's watch
There's a manic scream, hallelujah

My favorite, and most repeated lyric line of all time, courtesy of Mick Jagger:

You Can't Always Get What You Want

--it don't get any more plainer and simpler than that! :D

As for songs in general, pretty much anything Nightwish does, especially since Floor Jansen took over the singing duties. Black Sabbath was the first 8-track I ever bought back in '71 and I've been hooked on heavy metal ever since- and I can't believe I didn't find Nightwish until a couple years ago after a friend burned a couple of CD's for me. Just the other day I found their live Wacken show online, man.... :)

Are you in to any newer style heavy metal at all?

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio
Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson?
Joltin' Joe has left and gone away?

Well I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "resonate with you", but yesterday the lady inside may radio sang "sometimes you just have to play the fool" at the exact moment that I realized that I had made a pretty bad screwup.

As I've grown older, I find lyrics more appealing when they are much more "complicated". The word I'm searching for escapes me, but I sense you get the point.

Chase Mueller

Eric that's pretty funny, don't you love it when reality throws cute little jokes at you?

By resonate, I mean something that really sticks with you. Something that paints a picture in your mind, or brings back memories, whether good or bad.

Hurt, as sung by Johnny Cash;

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liars chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I will keep myself
I would find a way

Sounds of Silence by Disturbed is the best rendition ever. Even Paul Simon agrees. As far as other songs that have a personal meaning, there are many. I have spent so long working away from home in remote areas that music became my companion. Here's a selection, some of which you may have heard of...

Flame Trees by Cold Chisel
No Second Prize by Jimmy Barnes
Leather and Lace by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley
Sounds of Silence by Disturbed
Great Southern Land by Icehouse
When the War is Over by Cold Chisel
You're the Voice by John Fareham
Sympathy for the Devil by Rolling Stones
Angie by Rolling Stones
We Are the Champions by Queen
Learn to Fly by Pink Floyd
When the Level Breaks by Led Zeppelin.

That will do for now. A shrink would probably have a field day with that lot as they all have specific meaning for me and all have the power to bring a tear to my eye in a good way. Cheers

Never much liked Simon and Garfunkle, but the Lyrics to Sound of Silence seem to get me

Walkin in a Winter Wonderland also. But you have to know the backround. The author of the lyrics was a terminally ill tuberculosis patient at the West Mountain Sanitarium here in PA. He looked out on a snowy day and saw the other folks his age, strolling around with their sweet hearts and he fantasized about what it would be like to be one of them and wrote the words to a poem, Walking in a Winter Wonderland. The husband of another patient read the poem and put them to music. The author Richard Smith, died before he ever heard the song. It was first played after he died. "Later on we'll conspire, as we dream by the fire, and face unafraid, the plans that we made, walkin in a winter wonderland." Such a happy song had such a sad beginning.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
Its good to warm my bones beside the fire

Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

One more for you, Mother by Pink Floyd;

Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they'll like this song?
Mother, do you think they'll try to break my balls?
Ooh, aah, mother, should I build the wall?

Mother, should I run for president?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooh, aah, is it just a waste of time?

Hush now, baby, baby, don't you cry
Mama's gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama's gonna keep you right here under her wing
She won't let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama's gonna keep baby cozy and warm

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
Of course mama's gonna help build the wall

Mother, do you think she's good enough for me?
Mother, do you think she's dangerous to me?
Mother, will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooh, aah, mother, will she break my heart?

Hush now, baby, baby, don't you cry
Mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you
Mama won't let anyone dirty get through
Mama's gonna wait up 'til you get in
Mama will always find out where you've been
Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
You'll always be a baby to me

Mother, did it need to be so high?

Guess I'm in the minority on the Disturbed version of Sound of Silence. Thing is, I like their interpretation of it, but I can't stand his auto-tuned vocal. Oh well.

Moving on....

I want Johnny Cash's "I See a Darkness" played at my funeral.

Well, you're my friend and can you see,
Many times we've been out drinkin',
Many times we've shared our thoughts,
But did you ever, ever notice, the kind of thoughts I got?

Well, you know I have a love, a love for everyone I know.
And you know I have a drive to live, I won't let go.
But can you see this opposition comes rising up sometimes?
That it's dreadful imposition, comes blacking in my mind.

And that I see a darkness.
And that I see a darkness.
And that I see a darkness.
And that I see a darkness.

Did you know how much I love you?
Is a hope that somehow you,
Can save me from this darkness.

Well, I hope that someday, buddy, we have peace in our lives.
Together or apart, alone or with our wives.
And we can stop our whoring and pull the smiles inside.
And light it up forever and never go to sleep.
My best unbeaten brother, this isn't all I see.

Oh, no, I see a darkness.
Oh, no, I see a darkness.
Oh, no, I see a darkness.
Oh, no, I see a darkness.

Did you know how much I love you?
Is a hope that somehow you,
Can save me from this darkness.

For What It's Worth Buffalo Springfield (written by Stephen Stills)

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's s time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

They forge their creativity

Who can forget SRV

Hello there my old friend
Not so long ago it was till the end
We played outside in the pourin' rain
On our way up the road we started over again
You're livin' out dreams of you on top
My mind is achin' oh lord it won't stop
That's how it happened livin' life by the drop
Up and down that road in our worn out shoes
Talkin' 'bout good things and singin' the blues
You went your way and I stayed behind
We both knew it was just a matter or time
You're livin' out dreams of you on top
My mind is achin' oh lord it won't stop
That's how it happened life by the drop
No waste of time we're allowed today
Churnin' up the past, there's no easier way
Times been between us, a means to an end
God its good to be here walkin' together my friend
Livin' our dreams
My mind stopped achin'
That's how it happened livin' life by the drop
That's how it happened livin' life by the drop
That's how it happened livin' life by the drop

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now
Cause there's too many places I've got to see
But, if I stayed here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird you can not change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And this bird you can not change
And this bird you can not change
Lord knows, I can't change.

Will be played at my funeral

I left out few:
Sailing by Rod Stewart
Solid Rock by Goanna
Treaty by Yothu Yindi.

I get the point others have made about Disturbed and autotune. Its a new technology. It exists so we either get over it or never listen to new music.

Out of all my picks, the one that saved my life was 'No Second Prize' by Jimmy Barnes.

I heard about a person who had a broken heart
With nothing to drive him on, no hope, no flame, no spark
He couldn't see at all the tears they were blinding him
He kept it all inside, the guilt and all the pain
You know I say I tried to warn him
They had him backed up against the wall
I hope I'm not too late

No-one can tell you exactly what you have gotta do
You've got to stand your ground and fight to save your life
It may be hard but it's the only way
Always remembering there ain't no second prize
Etc.

Cheers

Lot of great stuff here everyone, many thanks for all the participation! Here's another for you(only some of the song):
Help!
It has gone black
The sky is black
Earth is frozen and black
The moon is black
Snow is black
Her eyes, when open, are black
Light is black
Leads are black
The wires that run from them or black
Stars are black
Time is black
But the thought of death is soft and clean and beautiful and white
It's the purest of the drugs
'Cause It's everything at once
What if meaning never comes?
And I was just someone to f**k?
All of life, beginners luck?
What becomes of all creation if the smallest prayer is firmly answered "no"?
The greatest of the floods
There's a vacuum where the brightest future was
I'd better warm up my gun in case love is not enough
I'd better warm up my gun in case love is not enough
What haven't I done? What have I done?

So, this song is called Petal by a metal band called Every Time I Die. While most think it's a snub to religion or god or whatever, it actually isn't. The entire album this song comes from(Low Teens), is about the vocalist (Keith Buckley) observing the world around him, feeling like everything is crumbling down while he sits in the hospital feeling helpless as doctors fight to save his kid. His very very young kid. The whole album is honestly an excellent way to tell his tale. Most of his songs are a little more in depth than this one, he used to be an English teacher!

I'm a folk/bluegrass/acoustic fan mostly. Here's the first verse of one of my favorites from a North Carolina band called the Avett Brothers:

When my body won't hold me anymore
and it finally lets me free
will I be ready?

When my feet won't walk another mile
and my lips give their last kiss goodbye
will my hands be steady?

When I lay down my fears, my hopes and my doubts
the rings on my fingers and the keys to my house
with no hard feelings.....

I love this whole song. The chorus is the best part. I also like the verse that says, "They own too much wicker and drink too much liquor..."

Kacey Musgraves-
Family is Family (Chorus)

Family is family, in church or in prison
You get what you get, and you don't get to pick 'em
They might smoke like chimneys, but give you their kidneys
Yeah, friends come in handy, but family is family

I'm surprised this one hasn't come up yet:

Imagine"
(from "Imagine: John Lennon" soundtrack)

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today... Aha-ah...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace... You...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world... You...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

This one has been rattling around in my head for a month. I think it's the Creedence Clearwater Revival version but I'm not sure.

If you're ever in Houston, oh you better do right.
You better not gamble. And you better not fight.
Sherriff Johnson will get you. And the boys'll bring ya down.

I meant to write that the song at the Dylan link I posted is strong in visualization, for me at least.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but there seems to be little interest in Dylan here at SMC. Or perhaps they aren't so outspoken.
This song is very high on most lists of the best songs. Best song ever according to Rolling Stone Magazine.
I think the instrumentation is near perfection. And lyrical content unmatched.
All member surely must have heard it a hundred times:

I'm a fan of that weird sounding guy :D
No, seriously though, I do enjoy his work. When I was in high school my English teacher played a song by him and we were told to decipher it,'bout fell out of my chair laughing when it started because all the other kids were asking what this garbage was and blah blah blah..Darn kids these days.
