Need help identifying lathe....

An acquaintance has the opportunity to pick up this old Rockwell lathe from a school liquidation sale for less than $100, more like $20-$40. He does not know anything about it except it is exceptionally heavy. He was also told to expect 3 phase current requirements. Any of you old tool buffs have any ID information that I can pass on to my friend? He has a Grizzly or something like that and wants to step up. I told him that he should buy it at that price if he has to replace the motor and all the electronics cause it looks like it will last a lifetime. Please tell me if I am wrong. Thanks, Mike.

That looks a lot like my 46-111 Rockwell (I have no cabinet with mine, though).

Check out the lathes at www.owwm.com (old wood working machines). There is a 46-111 that looks a LOT like that pict you posted.

Could be a real buy no matter how low the price...hmm...a VFD added to that three-phase motor (as long as it's 220/230/240)... ;) Darn nice, heavy spindle machine! (And bowls up to its swing limit)

He would be very wise to buy it for that price. It is much, much easier to obtain a high quality motor at a decent price than that quality old iron.
