I finished my first live edge bowl today. It is maple burl. about 5 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall. Finished with shellac, Watco Danish oil (natural) and about 5 coats of lacquer and then buffed out.

Random question about the finish - What does shellac prior to danish oil do?

Nice job Scott. All the little points look still there. Guess now you will be hooked and be doing more. I like turning NE pieces with or without the bark usually more in the long oval configuration and do not find the "sawtooth" edge you have here.

Random question about the finish - What does shellac prior to danish oil do?
I read an article by Jimmy Clewes that said sealing the wood evens out the sheen.
