A week ago a friend from work gave me a truckload of old maple burl. He knew I was getting a new lathe and figured I could used it. He said his grandfather cut it years ago and it has been in a shed ever since.
My lathe came in Thursday, I got it set up and checked out and turned a couple little things. So today I figured I would try one of the burl pieces. I picked a small piece that I could cut a round on my little bandsaw.
Little is relative, as it is the largest diameter I have ever turned. I have been using a little harbor freight lathe for the last year and a half and could only turn about 6 or 7 inches. This one is 9, but started about 10.
