I'm thinking this is some kind of weird ash. What's you opinion? The tear out was pretty spectacular.

Yes looks like Ash alright, i have no clue how to say it in english but the grain pattern and color are both "wood defects" neither with any negative effects. That kinda grainpattern is what Instrument makers are looking for while the brown heartwood is a defect called "Olive Ash" i believe.

I agree...some form of ash. 'Could be really interesting for the right project, such as an inlayed lid for boxes, etc. Really sharp hand tools and sanding will probably be the best way to avoid the chip-out.

thanks for the replies. I never know what I'm getting from the son-in-law. He brings me the 3x8 timbers after he's done with them, and I slice 'em up and see whats what. Mostly oak, occasional ash and sycamore. Even got a piece of cherry once. I have about 60 pieces stacked around the shop and outside. And he keeps bring them. He's a keeper. Here's an island I built from his wood.
