I would like to build some kitchen cabinets for my wife and redo her counter top with something nicer than the current white formica top. I would eventually like to tackle the upper cabinets but may just refinish them instead. I figure to make some cabinets for the shop to practice.

Can someone recommend a good book for learning the basics of cabinet making?

Thanks.

My suggestion is to go to a library and check out all of the big names and see which you like best. I have the ones form Lang, Probst, Schmidt and one other. I didn't care for any of them. I don't care for how modern kitchen cabinets are built. I was looking for what is standard and I came to the conclusion that nothing is standard.

They all vary from what I've gathered on these forums. Many based on commercial designs and not residential custom design. Over 36" and many are lost...

As suggested look at the library..

For my money, you can't go wrong with Bill Hylton's Illustrated Cabinetmaking, https://www.amazon.com/Illustrated-Cabinetmaking-Construct-Publishing-Subassemblies/dp/1565233697/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1519518627&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=illustrated+cabinetmaking&psc=1

I will echo Jeff in recommending Building Kitchen Cabinets by Udo Schmidt.

Building kitchen cabinets is a place to begin. There are many simple ways to creat a box. Then comes the doors and drawers, and the fun starts.

"The Encyclopedia of Furniture Making" by Ernest Joyce will provide all the traditional joinery information that you will need to know. Learn traditional joinery before finding shortcuts in modern tools, such as dominos and biscuits.

If your interests are in more modern designs, then you must read the books of James Krenov. These will inspire you to look at the wood differently. Start with "A Cabinetmaker's Notebook".

Danny Proulx's book on cabinet making changed how we do cabinets in our shop. Wish it was published thirty years ago, when we started. FYI, Danny died in his van outside a trade show several years back.

It's the only book you'll need.
