@Trent, Do you re-seal the bare engraved ceramic with anything or have you had any issues if you didn't? I had read something awhile back about sealing the exposed ceramic and even re firing in a kiln or oven but haven't tried it yet.

I've been working away at a 0.016" thick 12x18 brass sheet from Hobby Lobby. Today I decided to make a little Arizona pendant. The Arizona text has some depth to it and was done with a auto rotate .02 hatch and about 20 be passes. Cutting took about a minute and the entire pendant measures a little over an inch.

The leather I use, is around 2mm thick, I would say a little too thin for a coaster, my supplier in the UK sells thicker leather already cut into coaster shapes though. Do a search for Acorn Hip Flasks in eBay. They are based in Birmingham. I buy most of my leather direct rather than through eBay though.

Very impressive everyone!

Most of what I do isn't so "artsy" as the vast majority of my customers are other businesses & manufacturers.

This is what I do for my #1 customer, a ski-lift manufacturer:
I build all of their machinery operator panels--
This is 2 of the larger ones, they're roughly 20 x 31"-
380100
These are being tested before delivery & installation.

This is the inside of the cabinet-
380099

These are a couple of remote units, the panels are just under 13" square-
these live outdoors...
380101

This is a hydraulics & brake system monitor...
380102
-all these panels I build from scratch. A sheet metal shop makes them up for me,
most are made to size but since every install is custom I end up sawing up bigger
panels to make custom sizes. Nearly all panels are loaded with PEM blind studs on the back
for mounting the LED boards and such, and for mounting the panels to the steel cabinets.
All the machining is done on my Gravograph IS7000, and the bigger panels are laser etched
in the Triumph. I bought these 2 machines specifically to help build these panels.
My LS900 laser usually does all smaller panel etching...

My usually #2 customer builds these things--
380108
-mining trucks for mixing and dispensing ANFO to blow big holes in the ground ;)

The yellow arrows point to my work-
-on operator panel overlay and some labels-
380103

The overlay for this control box, and another E-stop label...
380104

These are fiberglass Hoffman electric boxes/housings.
I cut the holes and engrave the lids, the wife paints the engraving.
A couple of other controls labels are shown...
380105

My ski-lift mfr has been a customer since about 1984, my truck guys since 1991.
A side benefit (to me), both of these companies have had previous employees strike out on their own and start similar companies-
I do all of their engraving too :)

Stuart Petrie

The two urns on the right are done in a rotary engraver, not with a laser. Thats just how they come out, whatever base material it is they have under their layer of paint comes out really well.

Hi Nick, it's a 30w MOPAfrom RayFine, the specific source I had them install is the JPT YDFLP-30-M6+-L1. It has the highest output of their 30 watt MOPA series.

I attached a picture of one of the color tests I did on the bottom of a stainless tumbler. I'm always learning with it and when something fails I give it a go another time and sometimes find a setting that works. I gave up on a particular leather a few weeks ago but was able to dial it in yesterday.

Lol, that's awesome. One of the first things I made when I got my Co2 Laser was a gear for my vertical blinds. $0.10 worth of acrylic vs a $80 kit to get one piece is a no brainer. I've got a 3d Printer and the majority of what I've made have been useful widgets and repair items.

@Joseph, do you mean my color grid? It's just one of the test patters I did with my MOPA. I've been working on a few different logos and will post some color things when I get some I can share.

Gears and teeth are more complicated than some might think! Good job! http://www.engraver1.com/gifs/thumbup.gif

Yesterday I got one of those "I need these today!!" phone calls, part of which was "but I don't know if you can do these, or hold the tolerance they want?"
this was the job, etch a black line around a stainless part, some sort of medical tool-
380251
pretty tiny and tight tolerances to be sure, especially considering the line is to be .012" wide and the laser beam is half that wide!

this was how I did them- I needed a tailstock stop that would serve as the zero-start point, and keep the rod rolling true-
the rods are only .090" diameter, and where the line is engraved is only .034", less than a mm... any runout and the
beam will miss the rod! And that did happen a couple of times anyway. This was the only pic I got where the camera
caught the laser firing. The stop is just a piece of dowel I made from some other job and an aluminum hole cutout with
a tiny hole start to keep the point steady...
380250

I ended up with 5 good parts and 5 that were out of tolerance.
380249
They needed only 2 good ones, thankfully!

Awesome, I have their 30w q-switched fiber. I almost upgraded to the MOPA but I cheaped out. I have yet to actually find anything thin enough to cut out. I will have to pick some of that material up and try it out.

Not really... I am new to this as well..I bought my laser in January and just when I think I have it figured out it does something I was not expecting..I started out with Inkscape but found Corel to be a better program for me. I had some old Glock frames to practice on but you can get them fairly cheap online. I find them new for around $50. I have tried many settings and keep a log because every pattern seems to burn different. There are some companies that have classes for this kind of thing but Im cheap and like to do things the hard way.....so I am learning on my own, lots of trial and error and reading posts on sites like this...Im no expert thats for sure but have made a lot of progress since I started...Good Luck

This is a 5.5 foot stainless steel scale that I laser engraved using Laserbond. I had to split up my art and engrave most of the copy, then move it to engrave the rest as it is too big for my table. I used the spray can version to get an even coat. I was afraid to try the foam brush on such a large piece. I have never been able to achieve a black mark that I am happy with and I have tried all of the different brands and done power grids as best I could. My machine only engraves from black artwork, so assigning a power to a specific color is not an option for me. Spraying with a satin clear coat now should help to make the mark appear a little darker. Overall I'm happy with it.

Very nice job on that chunk of SS--

Slight hi-jack, since you LIKE the LaserBond and it does look nice in your pic, so I'm curious, anyone else currently using LaserBond?

I've been happy with Cermark for 18 years now, BUT, Cermark used in my 80watt glass-tube Triumph on stainless produces (my best analogy) a 70% black whereas the 3 Synrad lasers I've used ALL produce a 90-95% black. And I simply won't sell 70% black... I tried the Enduramark sample kit, and I found it DID produce a much blacker mark in the Triumph, but there issues; the thicker the stuff was gooped on, the blacker the mark, but I couldn't get the stuff to flow out flat , so at the edge of every brush stroke was a raised 'mountain' of e-mark that wouldn't flatten, and all those 'mountains' engraved darker than the 'plains'-- ie: inconsistent, and I won't sell inconsistent either. And FWIW, I won't spray either, must be brush-able. I know e-mark has changed, I need to order some and try it...

The LaserBond looks interesting, but my concern is the cost- yeah the 500gm bottle is $180 v $250 for Cermark, but the suggestions say a 1:1 mix with alky, and I'm at about 2.8:1 with Cermark, which is much more useable product-- $180/1000gm usable=18c a gram, $250/1900gm usable/250=13c a gram... Ok, not that big a deal ;) -- and, if it will work in the Triumph, I can just use Cermark everywhere else. Being able to actually use the Triumph for stainless would be huge for me, that was one of the main reasons I bought it!

Hi-jack done :) -and again, getting that much stainless to blacken that nicely is no mean feat, good job! http://www.engraver1.com/gifs/thumbsup.gif

Mike Null

Kev

I just got around to trying the new Enduramark stuff today. It is thicker by quite a lot but I couldn't brush it on and this job along with most of my work can't be sprayed. We went over them twice to get a more even coat but I'll be ordering Cermark shortly. My time is worth too much to worry about a few dollars saved on a product that diminishes my efficiency. I had previously mentioned the application shortcomings to the owner so maybe he is working on it.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but to continue with another comment on Enduramark. It is black--not more than Cermark but good. I mis-positioned a piece and had to remove the Enduamark. Plan on some work if you have to do it. It's darned near part of the metal.

Kev Williams
04-14-2018, 12:04 AM
interesting-- If I could put the Triumph on SS duty, it would free up SO much time on the other two lasers that it would be worth dealing with spraying the stuff. I just need to break down and buy a small bottle of both Emark and Lbond and see what results I get... Also interesting is that the Emark simply won't flow out. I have a certain something here I want to thin it with ;)

Mike Null
04-14-2018, 7:41 AM
It needs an emulsifier.

Back to the OP's topic. Here is a piece of Corian that I wanted to play with. I was attempting faux scrimshaw. I downloaded a line drawing (a Bitmap) and engraved it using my acrylic setting and 333 dpi. I then painted it with black ink, let it dry and sanded the surface to remove the excess ink. The engraving time was one minute twenty eight seconds.

Patrick,

The scale picture intrigued me, I first thought it was a trick, but after reading your text I was quite impressed how well this turned out. I zoomed in and was trying to find out where you moved the scale to mark the second half, but could not find it. You have figured out a way to perfectly align it. I was thinking what use this scale could be and thought maybe to measure height, then found a small mistake, the numbers are shifted, "1" should be where "2" is, the scale is 5 feet tall. Hope you figure out a easy fix.
