I have a W&H planer that's missing the dust collection hood. I've never seen a hood other than in pictures

Does that hood do anything other than being a dust collector for shavings? Some planers also use the hood as a chip breaker for the cutter head.

If it's no more than for dust collection I'll fabricate a replacement. If more I might buy a replacement from W&H.

The manuals for the older and newer machines are available online at their site. The chip deflector is not supposed to touch the wood but the manual for the older machines they said to have it touch if the wood being planed was under a foot long or less than half an inch thick.
