filler recomendatiion

Had to build up a curved surface by adding a piece of wood. Have a slight gap where they join and do not want to sand where the joint is. Gap is about 1/16", prefer to fill and refinish. Tried some wood putty it would not set up. Is there a type or brand that would set up so that it could be stained?

Not a woodworker on this type of project.

The first choice is ALWAYS use wood to fill gaps. It's the only material that's going to look like and take stain or dye the same way that the other wood will. There pretty much is no putty or filler that will do that. One alternative might be to use colored meltable fillers just prior to the very last coat of clear so you can match as close as possible to the tone of the finished wood. Remember, the "clears" actually add color, too.

I've had good results with TimberMate wood filler. Comes in many flavors and they can be further blended to fine tune the color. They take dye and stain pretty well, too. It is water based, so if it hardens in the tub you can easily reconstitute it, and any unwanted filler on your work is easily wiped off with a damp cloth.

As Jim says, fill with timber if you can. If you can't, John is right about Timbermate. It's the best by far. Cheers
