I went to Evansville, Indiana to purchase my first wood lathe. I have not used a wood lathe sense doing my student teaching at Chillicothe, Ill. in 1976. I buy almost all my tools on the cheap and I just never found a wood lathe at a good price. It was about 5 degrees outside when I unloaded it.

I don't even have any lathe tools for it yet so I borrowed some. The first thing I made was a handle for my cant hook.

Wow! What a great first lathe. It will be one that you can use and keep as long as you want. No need to upgrade.

That's cheating! You're supposed to buy a really cheap and bad lathe at first and suffer for a while like everyone else. THEN get the good lathe. Good grief... :)
You will LOVE that lathe. And nice job on the cant hook handle. I have two, one large with a 5' handle and one smaller. I'm considering making a longer handle for the smaller one for turning big logs on the sawmill. I wonder how many people here use their lathes to make tool handles. I do recommend getting a bed extension at some point!

That is a wonderful lathe. If you tell us you purchased it for less that $2k, I will cry tears of joy and incredulity for you.

Yes John , I know I went about it the wrong way but I have learned that I almost never get value out of cheep tools. Also, the resale on lathes is very good, not that I am going to sell.

No Neil, it was more than 2K but it was a good buy.
I really love the air museum on the Navy base in Pensacola.

Nice - you know you can't hook without a cant handle! Congrats.

Very nice first lathe and probably the last you will ever need!
