There is a sort of thin washer that fits in where the cutter head attaches and it looks like I need a new one. You can see the washer in the photo just below where it is supposed to sit.

It is a model 6001 six inch jointer.

Is it a bad idea to just put it back together as is? And not worry about the busted washer?

The washer is much thinner than an actual washer so I do not think finding a similar diameter washer would work.

Try McMaster-Carr. https://www.mcmaster.com/#shims/=1b5qxff.

If you cannot get a replacement you could try getting a sheet of shim material of the same thickness and make one out of it. You may also want to try Old Woodworking Machines web site someone there may have a better idea where to get the washer.
