View Full Version : How many Disston saws do you have?

I have seven Disstons. One is a shining newer saw, but the others have had the saw plates cleaned of grunge and rust.
I have crosscuts and rip saws.

Two have had the tooth line filed smooth and re-toothed. I made paper tooth spacing patterns and taped them to the saw plate.
I first file the tooth spacing, then file the rake and fleam.

Two have had broken handles replaced with new curly maple handles.

I think a discussion about old hand saws will be interesting.

This string came about as I was reading an article in Popular Woodworking about a tool test for Bad Axe D-8 handsaws. If the new woodworkers
in this group have never played with hand saws, you might want to. I find it to be enjoyable to gain new skills. Google "rake and fleam".

Google "rake and fleam".

Or visit > http://www.vintagesaws.com

Click on one of the saws along the left side of the page.

This site, by Pete Taran iirc, gave me all the information needed to sharpen my own saws.

Over 30 handsaws, 10 backsaws, 6 coping saws.....Disstons, Atkins, 1 Richardson Brothers...Then there are a few "Junky" saws hanging around.

Not that I am a collector......

Well, with the return of 60 and 70 degree weather to Galveston County Texas, I will be out in the garage workshop with the door up making sawdust.

I pity you guys in the cold climates. I have a son that lives in Connecticut. His son, my grandson enjoys skiing. I'll let him enjoy it.

Heck, getting busy in the shop usually keeps me warm. At least when it is in the 30s in the shop.

Too many...so I try and balance it out with some Atkins, Simonds, etc. I wish I could justify that I need them, but there is no justification. My goal is to get them all rehabbed this spring and keep about 10, send a couple to my nephew, and sell the rest. At least I am at the point I rarely buy any more.

Three Disstons. One, from my grandfather from the 50’s. Used to help build his house by him and my father. The other two from a Creeker. One rip, one crosscut. All my backsaws are non-Disstons, not by design but by accident. Obviously, I’m no collector.

Lowell,

That particular rack is part of my collection. The entire top shelf (no pun intended) are Disston 12s and 112s. Been searching them out for 25 years.

I declare we have a winner! Personally, based on Pete's picture I don't feel that bad about all the excess saws I'll l never be able to that are hanging in my shop. I guess it just goes to show that no matter where you think you are, there's always someone that's a little farther out on the spectrum..

Geez, whole shelf full of # 12's and # 112 – I'm guessing if you look up "an embarrassment of riches" in the dictionary there's a picture of Pete's till.

Cheers, Mike

I also have one D12, and a second on the way (I decided to help Pete out with his overcrowding problem).

I've got 12 backsaws and 17 unbacked saws. Because we're a foster family anything a social worker thinks might be dangerous needs to be locked up.
So they reside in two locking saw tills.
