With Christmas out of the way I seemed t have some left over cash, ( as weird as that sounds) Im looking to upgrade the shop a bit. I am looking at the grizzly G0771z cabinet table saw to replace my dewalt portable saw.
Also interested in upgrading my lathe, I have a HF 10x18 starter lathe now and want something that has a bigger swing for bowls and such like the GO838,or the GO462. What are your guys thoughts on either of these products? I'm aware that the 0462 is a bit fast of a turner for such a large swing but the price makes me have to consider it.

Im all ears let me know what y'all think.

what machines do you use the most?

if it was me, i would be upgrading the table saw, as you probably don't even know what you are missing when using a jobsite saw.

My opionion: get the lathe. If the choice is between a lathe and a tablesaw what you get the most value from depends on what you do or want to do in your shop some day. Me, I'd use the lathe more. I have a PM66 cabinet saw with a sliding table and I use the lathes at least 100 times more. Your own use, of course may be different. Any recommendations should be qualified with that understanding.

For the choice between the two lathes, the cheaper one (462) has a Reeves drive with a tachometer tacked on as an afterthought. Don't do it. Just say no. :) I would use one only if I had no other choice. The other one (838) uses an electronic VFD for variable speed. This will give you reverse as well as smooth speed adjustment. Far better choice, worth the cost IMO. Note that I have zero experience with these two lathes so this is based on my experience with other, similar lathes. (I have five lathes and this one looks quite similar to a couple of Jet lathes I have, although shorter bed length) Another upgrade option is look for a used Jet 1642.

Where do you live? Does Grizzly ship outside the USA?
I have an old delta lathe I would like to sell.

I would say the level of improvement going from a jobsite to a hybrid table saw is about the same as going from a Harbor Freight lathe to the Grizzly one. If you have the money, do both.

The TS is the #1 tool in most shops....since you mentioned it first, I'd do the TS upgrade in heartbeat. The jump from a portable jobsite saw to a decent full size hybrid saw will be huge. Maybe the proceeds from selling the DW will help fund a lathe.

hey bill I live up in santa rosa ca, not to far from you. what size lathe do you have?

As far as the hers comments I would say I use both tools equally, but I know the table saw would be a much better overall improvement to the shop. I cant afford both.

A good table saw is always a nice investment.

You'll be better served asking about the lathe in the Turner's Forum (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/forumdisplay.php?20-Turner-s-Forum) here at SMC where those machines are specifically discussed.
