Hello all,

To celebrate 2018, how about a review of projects completed this year?

I was able to get into the shop more this year than in the past couple of years. I finished a pair of desks. Well, almost... the one with the maple has yet to get set up in the house, but is finished:

375129
375130375131

My other two major projects were boxes for my mother in-law and my mother, who both turned 70. A keepsake box for my mother in-law with sandpipers:

375132

And a jewelry box for my mom. The heron is her totem bird. I just finished this one and will post a build thread separately soon.

375133
375134
375135

Happy New Year all and hope to see projects from other folks!

Best,
Chris

Mainly restorations for me.
Quite a few old chairs, tables and cabinets.

The most recent were a couple of blanket boxes that were keepers.

Australian Red Cedar (late 1800's).

Before ...

375154

After ...

375161

Kauri Pine (signed and dated 1844 under the lid).

Before ...

375156

After ...

375157

One commission was a gaming card box in Huon Pine and Australian Red Cedar.

Nice work guys. I like your sandpipers Christopher I swear Someday I'm going to try my hand at Marquetry. I've posted all my best work in the projects forum this past year. I ended the year making several walking canes cutting boards and beech spoons.
All my work is finished with hand tools and patience.
It would be great to see some of the work from the incredibly knowledgable members here. :)

There are a couple of projects from this year not including gifts for the grandchildren.

First was a piece of cabinetry:

375178

It has helped organize some more books and many smaller items.

Next was a box to replace an old shoe box holding my medications:

375177

Many of my projects do not get photographed. Some of my grandchildren are Harry Potter fans and wanted magic wands for Christmas.

My wife likes acorns so all the knobs on the drawers and cabinets in the kitchen have been replaced with acorns made of various woods on a lathe. The last three were recently finished, made of black walnut. It seems my stock of the fasteners needed to instal them has been wiped out.

375179

My recollection is this one is made of myrtle wood from Oregon.

Hopefully it will keep the wife happy and she might even cut me a little slack.

That heron is a real study in design and craft. I know the bird is made of pieces .....but I don't know where the borders are!

It was a slow year for me. Just a small table and a couple framed tiles.

A few replacement built-in cabinet doors for a client. Stain grade Ash, but they decided to paint. . . Milled with machines, but joinery is hand cut mortise and tenon.

A cherry trestle table with Ash base. Benches still need to be built for this one for seating.

I've got a few more, but have to find the pictures. . .

Those sandpipers are fantastic Christopher, they really have that shorebird feel. Many small projects last year, tools mostly. This Jack and smoothing kanna among them:

375292

375294

But most important was moving, getting a shop space of my own and finally building a bench

375293

I wish you all a productive year with interesting builds!

There's a lot of nice work here. Mine pales in comparison, but then I'm not in it for the show quite yet ;)

I seem to remember completing more projects this year (mostly jigs and shop gear), but the dates on the pics in my photo albums will keep me honest.

Here are 2017's bigger completions (click headings to view additional album pics):

Cherry and fir bookcase (http://sawmillcreek.org/album.php?albumid=867)

Oskar, thanks, they came out pretty good. Those planes look great and I hope you find your new bench to be as big of a game changer as I did.

Mike, you clearly had a productive year. Your bookshelf is beautiful and is similar to one I recall in FWW.

Yonak, thank you for the kind words. Happily, the box arrived to my mum today and she was right pleased with it, so mission accomplished!

Best,
Chris

Here are a few....
Guitar was a makeover for my Guitar teacher.. Veneered Macassar Ebony and black lacquer
Cabinets were for a friend .... they were two sets of these for his Teardrop camper
Last box was for my Grandson to store "special things"

375515 Cabinets were maple for a friend of mine who wanted them for his Tear Drop camper. I made the box using Kreg pocketholes. Installed full extension, soft close drawer glides to give full access to what is a "Small Space"

Wow, some amazing work from you all. For me 2017 was mostly the year of the door:

These three are Sapele and dyed to match the what I think is Philippine mahogany woodwork.

Then I did this house door in early Summer. Again, Sapele:

I squeezed in some time to make a table for my deck. It's now begging for chairs to go with it. Yep, Sapele again. I love that stuff.

Indeed! Though they seem to speak out a lot on their own ;)

Jim Tobias
01-05-2018, 4:54 PM
Yes Yonak....sorry, I had to run an errand. It took me so long to gather, resize pictures that I had to leave before leaving any detail. Now it is difficult to go back to original post.
I'll try to give a synopsis. Several of the boxes have patinated copper veneer panels. I purchased the copper veneer from Joe Woodworker. It was already patinated(chemical process.. different chemicals cause different reactions(colors/patterns) in the copper. I really like the look of this....it (IMHO) goes so well with so many different woods.
The other top panels are: inlay of crushed green malachite in a pattern that I transferred onto the wood and carefully carved out with Foredom.
Did string inlay of ebony and holly in a Roble veneered top panel using Lee Valley string inlay cutting tool. Design was my own random idea.
The guitar makeover....my guitar teacher(I began lessons 5 years ago at age 62 when I retired) had this Neil Schon (guitarist from Journey) guitar that he wanted refinished. he said he was not concerned about any historic value so away we went. he chose the Macassar Ebony veneer. I did a bookmatch on front and back and trimmed out with Black Lacquer. Then we used Rustoleum Hammered finish paint for the faceplate and dials, etc. I thought it turned out well....he loves it, so I'm happy.
The tissue box is from Wormy Chestnut. I had a piece that I kept looking at that had the knot in it..... I finally decided to make a tissue box using the knothole as the dispensing hole. Had to do a lot of smoothing so the tissues would catch.
The last couple of boxes on 2nd page(I think) were: 1 - Elm Burl with a turned Elm Burl lift/knob. 2 - Spalted sycamore top with an Oak acorn hull from my yard filled with coarsely crushed Tiger's Eye stone. I soaked/hardened the acorn hull with Polychryl and also filled the bottom inside with epoxy to firm it up.

Jim,I like them all, my favorite is the one with the concave sides. I've always preferred small boxes that look fragile. I notice that my eye always perceives a closed box to be "too thick" if they are smooth all over on when closed ...even if they actually are thin.

Ok, I'll play. This jewelry chest is African Mahogany. The Gilpinoid legs were the biggest challenge (aside from the AM tending to potato chip when resawn). Technically it was completed in 2017, although it was a Christmas Present for 2016 (oh well, another IOU in a long history of IOUs!)

Doesnt compete with with the projects posted before mine but I made this buffet for my wife for Christmas using a set of old interior solid wood doors that I picked up a while back and an oak butcher block top. The shelves and back are birch ply and the face trim is pine. Finished in a craft style with multiple colors of chalk paint and Polycrylic top coat. Again, nothing compared to the many great projects above but she likes it.

We have a wide opening between the kitchen area and family room in our home. Sometimes we want our dogs to stay in one of those areas. When we moved in a few years ago we put in a wide baby gate but the dogs finally wiped it out trying to go through the narrow opening side by side too many times.

As a result I designed this built this solution. Part of the opening is closed off by a bookshelf and I made a rolling gate for the rest of the opening that rolls behind the bookcase when it’s open. So far it’s worked out great.

The piece is made mostly from stained red oak that I had left over from past projects. I also bought some read oak boards for the top of the bookcase and the shelves. To fill in where I needed some wood I used some scrap black walnut as an accent wood.

376245

The bookcase now holds the photo albums we’ve created for out AKC Champions and a few pieces from our collection of basset figurines. Nadia, our youngest, is laying on the rug in the background.

What a great idea for a thread. There's some really cool work submitted so far.
Here are a couple pieces I made this year. The first is a mid-century modern tv console for a local audiophile. It has adjustable shelves within and frosted glass that allow the infrared from the remote controls to pass through.
376260
The second is an office credenza made of a mix of solid and veneered walnut, featuring front and end panels of highly figured walnut burl veneer. The credenza is deceptively complex since graceful curves at the front and side dictate that drawer fronts and doors also have to be curved. The sides and front components are made of layers of bending plywood and veneer bent against two separate forms. The hand-cut dovetailed file drawers ride on full-extension, soft-closing slides, and the doors are hung with brass knife hinges. Both the drawers and doors make use of push-to-open hardware to keep the front lines clean. This piece won Second Place overall at the 2017 Texas Furniture Makers Show

I've only been in the hobby since this time last year so 2017 was full of shop projects, garage upgrades, etc. I only got around to a few projects that will live outside the shop.

The first project I did was some window boxes for my cousin. I built them out of MDO and Azek. They turned out great, better than I actually thought they would.

https://i.imgur.com/wR3UC99.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/tCTabTr.jpg

The next project was some cornhole boards. Again, for my cousin (that's a recurring theme here :D). These things were a pain. I made two sets total because I jacked up the first ones. In the end, they did turn out well.

https://i.imgur.com/VSrx5ul.jpg

Then my cousin wanted a really large cutting board so I made this one out of walnut, padauk and yellowheart. It's 36 x 16 and 1-3/4 thick.

https://i.imgur.com/SAoORH8.jpg

I posted that to Instagram and people seemed to like so I made some more for people to give as Christmas presents.

https://i.imgur.com/y5vTYLg.jpg

For my shop projects, I had four of note. The first was my assembly/outfeed table with a fold down extension. By far the best shop project I've built to date.

https://i.imgur.com/ECEQAyv.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/sCRDIdg.jpg

Next was my drill press table. I dont use my drill press a ton yet but it sure make it easier to use.

https://i.imgur.com/a5Czoz2.jpg

One day I hope to build out one wall of my shop with a miter saw station with tons of storage. However, I wanted something in the meantime as stop gap. On a whim one Friday night I just started cutting some wood and playing around with things and ended up with this:

These are great projects. I really really like that heron box.

My attempt at a bistro table (cherry with metal, bondo and paint):

My attempt at a coffee table (walnut and glass):

I did a lot of other stuff it seems, which is fun to look back on. However, these are probably the 'best of' category for me.

Fun looking at all of your projects. Love the dressers. Can't wait to make one.

andrew, I really like that little glass undershelf on the coffee table. That's just the bees knees. How is it held in place ?

My finest piece yet. Was supposed to be a tool chest for hand tools but my wife immediately claimed it for our living room.

Here is a pine kitchen hutch I made last year for my wife for our cabin. I installed dimmable LED strip lights inside the cabinet to show off the dinner plates, knick knacks she wanted to have on display. Combination of power tools, hand tools used throughout build.

Good job Pat, that would look right at home in my cabin too. :)

I have completed a model of a house in Archangel, Russia built by Nicolai Sutyagin in the 1990s to 2008 when it was torn down. Limited information and some photographs are available on the internet. I was fascinated by it and have been building a model with thin sheets of resawn pine. Size is 25" x 32" x 58". The most difficult part was weathering it with plaster, paint, and stain. I'll try to get it into the crafts building of the MN State Fair for 2018. I hope some enjoy this.

I just got into woodworking last year and hadn't made anything since shop class in the 8th grade back in 1969. Most of my 'building' these past years has been metal work building various aircraft. This is my first post on the forum but I have been reading it for some time now.

I completed two main projects last year. The first is a grandfather clock. Made with cherry and finished with just boiled linseed oil.
No idea why the picture came out sideways. Can't figure out how to rotate it. Anyway, just turn your head sideways. :D Think I got it fixed.

The second is a kitchen cabinet for the wife. It's made out of solid red oak.

Here is my first cedar chest I've built. I built it with ash and walnut. I then layered the inside with cedar. Also, I used my Powermatic mortising machine on it for the first time. I built it for a friend of mine for his wedding gift. He and his wife love it.

Just got into woodworking last year. Recently moved to Japan and needed a table so I decided to build one. The wood came from the beams of an old Japanese farmhouse that was torn down. I got the last of the available lumber and it was in rough shape so I decided to salvage what I could and build a butcherblock style table. Wood is Japanese white oak (nara). Table is 2 inches thick with an inner border of maple (kaede) finished with a 3 inch oak border. Base is Japanese cedar (sugi) but I'm probably going to change it when we get back stateside.

Don"t know if these qualify as"woodworking" but I've been making toys for my grandson, a santa sled and a pirate ship.
