Fall Holdout

Yesterday I was mowing the lawn and realized that our Japanese Maple hadn't dropped many leaves and, in the sunlight, was almost cranberry juice colored. I thought it would make a neat picture to have the green lawn, trees in back that have already dropped their leaves as a contrast to the J-maple. Unfortunately, it was late in the afternoon so the sun was dropping by the time I finished the front yard and could take the picture.

The tree's color was especially brilliant this year. We think it's because we're discussing taking it out because it's grown so much it hides the front of the house.

Bob - That's beauty! And it would be sacrilege to simply cut it down. I'd first talk to an arborist and landscape architect as there well may be a way to retain the tree and also selectively prune it to showcase the house.

On the other hand - I wonder how that stuff would turn.......

Rob, I've gotta vote with Andy about trying some selective pruning first, 'cause that tree sure is a Beauty. I sure had some second thoughts when I had to cut down my biggest and prettiest Pecan tree because it was right square in the middle of where the shop had to be built. I still miss that tree. (Naturally, it couldn't be built where the other Pecan tree is that never has been as nice as the one that had to be cut down).

Very nice picture, Rob. I actually noticed a few maples in my neighborhood turning nice colors last weekend. The fall colors are so few and far between in my neck of the woods, it can almost go unnoticed.

We had to have a real pretty 35-year-old Japanese Black Pine removed earlier this year. The previous owners, in their efforts to dress the place up to sell it, re-sodded the lawn last summer, and in doing so they not only changed the grade around the trunk of the tree (which the arborist said would have likely killed the tree), they cut all the feeder roots when they roto-tilled the yard prior to laying sod. It stayed green through last winter's heavy rains, but by springtime it died of dehydration, even though the lawn around it was getting watered daily.

Summer just won't let go here in south Texas. Highs in the mid to upper 80s and lows of 70 and humid. We have Japanese maple in our back yard and it is a very small tree, Its growing under a live oak because it just won't stand the summer sun here. Its beautiful right now with the red leaves against the green live oak.

You should take a pic Dennis....Sounds nice. The live oak is my favorite tree to look at and your arrangement sounds beautiful.
