I'm about to install some cedar shingle siding and am thinking about finishing it before I install it. I really don't want it to discolor and I don't want to have to tape everything and spray it later, so I'm thinking of taking each shingle and giving it a finish bath.

Good idea? Any suggestions of what to use as the finish? Any other good options?

Thanks,

Actually it's a great idea. The real problem arises when you try to find room to dry the shingles. You will have alot of shingles to try an spend out. It's been awhile since I used to finish shingles but I always liked Cabots oil stains. They come in transparent, semi trans, and solid (OVT). Under no circumstances should you use paint or will most likely be condemed to a life of maintaince.

As for the drying issue. How about a good old fashioned outdoor laundry drying thing - the umbrella looking deal that spins. Get several bunches of clothespins and you're good to go. I'd guess that you could get three maybe four bundles hung up at one time.

Or just a whole lot of clotheslines and pulleys from one spot to every tree on the property.

Yup long term project.

I only have about 8 bundles to do, so I figured a line and a stack of clothes pins. The biggest pain I see is having to finish the cut ones after they are cut.
