So I put my first coat of poly uretheane on a piece, let it dry and hit it with some 320 grit sand paper. Put a second coat on, but after it dried I can see scratches I assume are from the first sanding. Is this normal, should I proceed with my third coat and see what happens?

Jim - You might have used a little too much pressure with the 320 which left the scratches. Or possibly didn't wait quite long enough after drying. A third coat may help fill in and hide the scratches, but they may be too deep to be hidden. Only one way to find out. Using a satin poly might make them less noticeable as well.

Are you sure those scratches aren't down in the wood itself, under the finish?

Thanks for the replies, was out on Vacation. I hit them again with 320 on random orbital and re applied a coat, they are gone. Looks great! thanks
