I would like a good moisture meter but can’t afford a Delmhorst. Are there cheaper alternatives where its possible to attatch that kind of probe with the integral hammer and isolated pins so its possible to measure core moisture ?

I don't know about current prices but http://www.lignomatusa.com/ has historically been a good bang for the buck.

I got a harbor freight pin type (Centec) bought 20 years ago , I bet I paid no more that 10 bucks for it still works reads 4 to 30 percent. I would buy better if this thing would just quit working.

Would i work to buy one of the cheap pin types and solder wire and nails to the pins and use the nails to penetrate the wood to the desired dept ?

if you could find out what the ohms reading would be a certain moisture content and distance between, a ohm meter with pin contact probes would be all you would need.
