Ok, since it's platter day again, this might be "close enough".;)
16"D x 3"T. This came from a huge Oak blown over during hurricane Katrina at my brother's. The tree was hollow, and I cut this standing inside the 6' diameter stump that was left. Several coats of Watco then buffed.

Absolutely beautiful piece. You have a way of bringing out the best in a piece of wood. BUT, as with any contest there must be well written rules and I think 2-7/8" should be the maximum allowable for a platter. :D

SWEET PIECE, Travis.

I had never heard of curly or quilted OAK, but your beautiful piece and two boards I picked up this past weekend of Quilted Oak made me a believer.

Travis - Awful tall for a platter. But might be okay for a plateur.

Otherwise, she's a beaut.

What a great piece of wood! You worked it over real nice! And like has already been mentioned, the story around it gives it extra flavor.

Thanks for the picture!

Down here we have a saying, "Close enough for govment work," to be a platter, but who cares if it is a platter or not. Anything this beautiful is indeed a sight to behold, and the simple lines were just right for showing this beauty. Thank you for allowing me to look at it.

Travis,

What a great form and execution! Did you use a vacuum chuck?

Thanks for the comments everyone. It was tough seeing those old trees downed, but if I can salvage a few pieces from them, I'll be happy.:)
Chris, I'd be lost without my vacuum chuck!

Travis, Ditto on the other posts, beautiful! Maybe I should quit
throwing all that Oak into the burn pile!

It's nice when you can find something that large and then turn it into a thing of beauty, very, very nice Travis.
