Hi all,

I'm curious what everyone is using to anchoring railing in a home. Are you using lag bolts into the wood? Do you somehow install studs? I'd like a nice head because they will show. Examples of railing anchorings that I like:

Apart from utilitarian jobs, I have used stainless coach screws, Allen head countersunk coach screws and studs that have a dome nut on top and coach thread on the bottom. These last ones screw in with the nut in place and you undoand refit the nut to install the post. Cheers

Climbable railings over large drops like those shown are a really bad idea if children will ever be in the space, lots of jurisdictions don't allow them.

I prefer to run posts down into the framing and cross-bolt them to the floor joists or bracing installed for that purpose. I've found most posts installed with screws from the surface end up wobbly before long.
