Hi Everybody ! Recently, I post my first project, which was a tool chest.

Since my girlfriend learned me that she was pregnant, I decided to build my own baby crib. So I choose yellow birch and black walnut. I bought the plan at http://www.plansnow.com and bought also the hardware kit at the same place.

Here is some pictures of the project from the beginning. Hope you'll enjoy to see the construction.

Making the Upper and lower end rail

I have to say that these were my first tenon-mortise joints. It was more easy then I expected.

For the slats, there were no mortises, just a groove with filler blocks between slats. The upper end rails were square. The lower end rails were cut with an arc in the band saw in the lower part. You see the legs in the back.

Slats
To made the slats, I took a piece of 8/4 of yellow birch and planned it to 1inch3/8. In fact, the thickness of this piece is the width of the slats.
I cut the slats at the band saw with my resaw-home-jig.

Assembly
Only the tenons-mortises received glue. The slats were floating.

Top caps
The top caps is made with a black walnut piece and a yellow birch after.
The black walnut piece are glued and screwed.
The birch piece are only glued.

The pyramids
I made the pyramids with a 1inch3/4 by 1inch3/4 black walnut piece.

Make it square and perfect fit.

Finishing
For the finishing, I choose to apply one coat of super blond shellac, to enhance the grain of yellow birch. After, I apply 4 coats of acrylic varnish with a HVLP (one of my friend did it)

And here is the final look !

I learned a lot in this project. Many new technics, many new tools manipulation, a new king of finishing. But also, a great project for my girlfriend and me. Hope you'll appreciate this smal review!

That's a beautiful job Mario, and one for a great reason, too. The pyramids really add a nice touch. I hope you can show some pics of the crib in action.

Fantastic job on the crib Mario - great pictorial.

Hi Everybody ! Recently, I post my first project, which was a tool chest.

Are you sure you meant to say that the tool chest was your first project or did you actually mean that it was your first project you posted here? I ask because wow, if you are just new to this, you have found your calling for sure! A most excellent job that anyone would be proud to have made.

Thanks everybody for the comments. Shelley, yes, the tool chest was really my first big project. It was either my first post here also. The crib is my second project in woodworking. I'm in woodworking for 2 years now (just a hobby on evening and week-end) but the other project I did before were some jig and shop installation. Make some little boxes for my fishing flies. Little project to learn how to use tools and basic technics in woodworking like the joinery. But in cabinetery, this was really my first one.

I'm perfectionist and I'm learning quickly. I think these were 2 good qualities for woodworking. It became a passion now. And at 30 years old, I have many years in front of me !

I'm back in the shop these days. I build currently a cradle. I'll show you picture when it will be done. Hope it will be finish when the baby will born !
