Hello,I'm new the the forum and have been reading as much as i can as i'm new to woodworking. I'm mostly interested in hand tool woodworking in a spare bedroom of my house. They just dropped a huge tree across the street from my work and i could grab some of the wood, but i have no idea what it is.

Can any of you ID by these pictures?

The view of the grain was actually a limb. The trunk is about 3-4 feet in diameter with lots of heartwood.

I'm in Oklahoma City

Thanks!

Where in the country are you?

Could it be Poplar?

Looks like it is a poplar, possibly a cottonwood poplar.

Agree with cottonwood. The wood is weak ,healthy big branches will fall off with no warning.

After looking at some pictures, i think you all are right on the money with cottonwood. It was a very tall tree. Surprising it lasted so long as we get frequent ice storms during the winter which take out a lot of weaker trees.
