Ok...Chest of Drawers is done. On to something else?

Have a few Cherry boards..
367205
4 are in the range of 13-14" long, and a shorty...mainly around a 1 x 6 size.

Went through this stack, smoothing the faces, and making a shaving or two..
367206
Used the "new" Stanley No. 4 to plane things a bit..
367207
Bench getting filled up...most of the boards cleaned up nicely...
367208
But there was a couple bad spots..
367209
Plane never had any trouble....

Plan ( Plan? Plan?) is to resaw these down, somewhere between 1/2" or 3/8" thick. Then see about a simple box build? Box joints? Maybe another fancy lid? Not sure how wide or long, or high. BTW: I can also add a bit of that Black Walnut, if needed....or...make a matching box in walnut?

Just a start up....stay tuned...:D

This being a Monday....shop is closed. I am sitting here having a cold one, and relaxing this holiday. Might try to get something done tomorrow....have a safe holiday.

Got bored...and paid the price of being in the shop on a Monday.....

Got these all about the same width...
367283
Checked the edges for square....and a Junior Jack plane to "adjust" ( chest starts hurting.....Hmmm)
Built a jig..
367284
Couple of screws to hold it together...set it up on the bandsaw...
367285
Had to adjust the height..twice...then tried to find a clamp..
367286
(chest still hurts) set it about 1/2" away from the blade....hoping I had it lined up right..
367287
And ran all the boards through...had to grab a "push stick" ( the top of the jig that was too high..) to help the last inch or so through..
367288
Decided to try to plane away some high spots, and the saw marks....( forgot to turn that fan on..)

Got the second slab almost done.....chest was hurting too much.:(..I swept up the 3 pounds of shavings....and made my way up the stairs.....and right to the pill bottle...:(

They are working....head has quit thumping, chest has almost quit hurting....I am done for the night...

Stay tuned....at least tomorrow isn't a Monday...

Well, long night allowed the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up to work out a "New Plan" that MIGHT involve a bit of a Walnut frame to enclose these thing Cherry panels....Maybe a tray inside? Walnut, Cherry, or even maple for a lid? maybe even all three? Need to hide "plan" so Boris can't steal it...

steven c newman
09-05-2017, 4:34 PM
Ok...hauled a "new" mitrebox saw to the shop. Also lugged a 1 x 4 x7' Black Walnut plank to the shop......tried the saw in my Stanley #2246 mitre box.....cuts binding up...no set? Put the 4 x 24" saw back into the box..
367324
Had work for it to do.....

One task was to get rid of things like this..
367325
I cut out any "bad areas" and tried to get the "good" sections squared up...
367326
Not a straight edge to be found.....well, I dug out a straightedge, marked a few lines along the worst of the curved edges.

Tried to use the bandsaw to rip the curved spot off.....Motor was running....pulley to the drive wheel was turning....but NOT the drive wheel? Hmmm, dug out the allen set, and checked the set screw....wasn't even close...cranked it down, TIGHT. Tried it again...saw ran like new! Imagine that..

367327
Soo...this is the Walnut parts, so far. They will need to have the edges jointed. Then a groove milled here and there...maybe a T&G for the corner joints? I set aside the too thin Maple stuff (tray parts?) and that left me..
367328
Need to flatten these. need to park the mitre box...elsewhere...and start on some frames.

Back was hurting, right between the shoulder blades....swept the floor, turned the light over the bench off, and called it a day...not going to push things too hard, after last night...:(

Stay tuned....might be something else getting done..tomorrow....we be moving along at the speed of.....smell...:D

Lovely, as always. Both the Cherry and Black Walnut. I love both of them; they make excellent neck wood. But if I had to choose I am sooooo partial to Black Walnut. Love the way it smells, the way it planes, lovely.

Teaser alert.....there was a glue done this morning.....film @ 2300 Hrs....stay tuned

steven c newman
09-06-2017, 4:59 PM
Glue up #1...
367394
Panel work for #2..
367395
Beveled the edges..
367396
Easier than trying to plane the entire panel down...
367397
Ends....
367398
Will need a groove made for the T&G corner joint,,
367399
Going to see how these look, as either raised panels, or flat panels...glue up #2

Have also started work on the end assemblies...

Have had old internet removed, new Cable Bundle Internet installed......have chased a bat out of the house...Bat tried to crawl away, cat found it, and that was the end of the bat...threw the "remains" out to the street.

And, how was YOUR day?

steven c newman
09-06-2017, 10:23 PM
Out of the clamps...
367409
Side #1, with the raised panel look..
367410
Or..the flat panel look?
367411
Side #2, raised panel look...might go with that...
Once I get the end panels made, I need to change cutters..twice...
367412
This is my Tongue & Groove set. 3/16" I think is the size. match is a #6, groove cutter is a #11...
Maybe someday..I might find a bench under there?
367413
Maybe?
367414
BTW: I got tired of the bench light always being in the way.....it now has a better place to sit, and I can reach more areas with it.
Single Brain Cell Sketch Up has come up with a couple more "design changes" .....stay tuned...

steven c newman
09-07-2017, 5:22 PM
Ok...Bit of work done, until the shoulder blades started hurting, again...
367450
Made four of these..
367451
And four of the rails...beveled a couple panels..
367452
And glue a set up..
367453
Red C clamp to hold a caul in place, to keep things lined up...
367454
Mitre saw to cut to length. It also cut the shoulders for the tenons. Bandsaw to do the cheek cuts...
367455
Checked to make sure these matched each other. Mitre saw to correct. Need to set up to use these cutters..
367456
Once the ends are out of the clamps, I can set up to mill the tongue. Then set up to mill a matching groove..
367457
Dry fit, while waiting on the clamps..Bottom will rest on a small "ledge" I will attach around the bottom edges. Still working on a design for the top/lid...

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
09-07-2017, 10:26 PM
First end assembly is out of the clamps. Stanley 45 has been reset..
367486
And the tongues have been milled on both edges..
367487
Found a better way to hold the part, than in the vise...
367488
Two c clamps to clamp the assembly to the side of the bench....then I am in-line with the bench, instead of going across it.
Second assembly is sitting in the clamps
367489
maybe tomorrow, I can mill the edges on it, too.

Then I can reset the 45 to make a matching groove for the tongues to get glued into?

Stay tuned...about halfway done...:D

steven c newman
09-08-2017, 2:07 PM
Second end panel now has been milled..
367522
Needed to build a jig, and reset the plane's cutter
367523
Narrow cutter, needs only one skate, and the fence
367524
Simple enough jig, to make sure the panel doesn't move. I also checked to fence setting, by a nibble on one end. needed moved a hair..
367525
Mill one groove, test the fit..
367526
Reset the depth stop a bit higher, for a deeper groove.
Got all four grooves milled, made another jig..
367527
Supposed to help when I am glueing things up...
367528
Then spread some Elmer's around, and get out a forest of clamps..
367529
Had a diagonal clamp, to pull things into square...will let this mess sit awhile....need to see about what kind of top/lid I can cobble up...
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
09-08-2017, 10:38 PM
Have put the Stanley#45 away, for now.....may need it again, later.

Have a couple cleats glued in place, for the Poplar bottom panels to sit on. May just use a dab of glue in the center, to hold the bottom in place....we'll see

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
09-09-2017, 11:50 AM
Clamps are off...
367575
Had to trim the panel for the bottom for width..
367576
And, straighten a wavy end..
367577
Takes a while, when you are getting see-through shavings...
367578
Custom Fitted, of course....

Might move all this stuff aside, and try to make the lid/top for this box...stay tuned...

Nice Steven. I like raised panels. How did you join the end frame assemblies to the side frame assemblies? T&G? Just glued? Can't quite see what happened there.

steven c newman
09-09-2017, 1:49 PM
Made a T&G to glue the parts together...Stanley 45 made the tongue and groove cuts.

David Eisenhauer
09-09-2017, 2:04 PM
Thought so. Thanks for the info and photos.

steven c newman
09-09-2017, 5:20 PM
New stick of Black Walnut has been "processed".....parts for the lid rough cut to size. 3 pieces have been glued into a panel...."Plan" is for a Walnut raised panel, sitting in a Walnut frame...a bit boring....out of Cherry. waiting on the glue to dry....and the camera's battery to charge up....

Will "update" as things develop....stay tuned....

steven c newman
09-09-2017, 8:16 PM
Ok...camera is back up and ready to go...:D

Three boards to make a panel...
367591
Will be running a plane all over this panel..tomorrow. This will be a raised panel..
367592
Needed to rip this right down the center, to make a couple Long rails.....Clamped them back to back in the vise...
367593
As the edges were a tad..rough..
367594
Planed both edges like this, trying to get them to match each other..
367595
All of these parts were roughly cut to length, on the Langdon Mitre Box. Even the two for the short rails..
367596
One blank was a tad wider than the other....ripped most of the excess off....then clamped both in the vise, and planed the edges smooth.

Letting the panel blank sit overnight. Will trim it to size and square....then bevel the four edges to make a raised panel.

Need to reset the Stanley 45 to plough a few grooves for the panel to sit into. Stay tuned...

steven c newman
09-10-2017, 8:19 PM
Blank is out of the clamps..used a plane to level it out a bit..
367668
Made a mess on the floor, again...
367669
Made a jig to hold the panel still....
367670
So I could bevel the edges...
367671
Then I had to re-do the jig..
367673
So I could milled a few grooves..
367674
For the raised panel to sit in. Milled a few tenons, spread some glue, and fought with a few clamps..
367675
Cauls at each corner. A clamp, two cauls and two hands....too many of one, not enough of the other...

367676
Spent a little time this morning...rearranged the til a bit. Couple planes needed a bit more "elbow" room. need to build an add-on, to house the "extras" ?

James Pallas
09-10-2017, 8:48 PM
Looks good Steven. How thick is your panel?
Jim

steven c newman
09-10-2017, 8:54 PM
3/4" thick. Need to find some hinges..next

Stew Denton
09-10-2017, 11:41 PM
Steven,

Nice job on the raised panel. I really like the way it looks.

Look out for your planes, as it looks like they are reproducing when it's dark. They don't realize that if they aren't planning ahead they can out grow their home. I have the same problem to some extent, except my planes never had a home to start with. If they don't have a home to out grow to begin with, and you don't have room to begin with, they can out grow their space pretty fast, even if I have less planes than you do.

Stew

Lid is out of the clamps, and has been trimmed a bit..
367701
"We have work to do.."

steven c newman
09-11-2017, 9:07 PM
Tried a single coat of Amber Shellac tonight..
367709
Back of the chest....no hinges have been installed..yet
367710
A view of the end....note the feet...
367711
Missed a couple spots on the edges....get them on the next coat.
367712
And the lid.....maybe tomorrow, I can get a bit more done....

Pat Barry
09-12-2017, 8:02 AM
Nice project steven. Boy you sure work fast!

steven c newman
09-12-2017, 12:02 PM
Yep...might get this done by next weekend.....

I only work 2-4 hours in the shop...before the back acts up. Sometimes, I get bored, and make a return trip to the shop.....

Gouge to make a finger groove to lift the lid.....hmmm, might have a gouge in the shop. Might trace out the outline first, then "dig out" the waste....we'll see..

Need to look into making a tray..or two.....lift-out ones. I'd rather not mess with a mirror under the lid...IF someone else wants to add a mirror.....

James Pallas
09-12-2017, 2:04 PM
Very good looking box Steven.
Jim

steven c newman
09-12-2017, 2:48 PM
And I thank you!

Groove for the finger rest has been made, used a nice wide gouge for that. Hinges have been installed.....trays have been canceled....

Case is upstairs, awaiting coat #2 of the shellac..will post a picture later...

steven c newman
09-12-2017, 5:10 PM
Coat #2 is dry and tack ragged off. 1st coat of a clear gloss poly is now on. waiting on it to dry enough that I can rub it out.

Trays were not working out the way I was looking for. Not enough thin material for the bottoms, nor enough for the sides....rather than cobble something together, and have it look bad (ugly) I decided to skip the trays....until I have better stock to work with.

Maybe later this evening...I can post a couple pictures of the completed box? Does anyone want the dimensions of the box?

Which..leaves...that ....LARGE ...stash...of Maple...to build something out of....never ends...

steven c newman
09-12-2017, 7:06 PM
Needed a gouge to make a detail.
.367736
And the "Detail"
367737
A place for a couple of fingers to rest, as they open a lid....
367738
Small hinges. Bottom panel is 1/2" thick Poplar.
367739
Close the lid....
367740
Front of the chest..
367741
Hinge view...
367742
One of the end views..

Chest measures: 9-1/4" tall. Front to back: 11", counting the finger rest in the lid... Side to side: 15-3/8" over the ends of the lid.

Mainly Black Walnut, case has Cherry Raised panels. Not too bad of a little project?

2 coats of Amber Shellac, then 1 coat of Clear Gloss Poly.

I really enjoy following your build threads, Steven. Your approach is amusing and motivating.

steven c newman

Thank you, I try not to be too boring....it is all about having fun, is it not?

Mark Stutz
09-12-2017, 8:48 PM
Looking good! I would never have thought to do the T&G joint on the corners.

steven c newman
09-12-2017, 8:57 PM
Thank you. Used those instead of screws for quite a while now.

Mark Stutz
09-12-2017, 10:26 PM
Given that it is a small chest and probably not subject to lots of stress, wouldn't the long grain to long grain joints be sufficient by themselves?

steven c newman
09-12-2017, 10:37 PM
The tongue & groove helps align the joint, much like a biscuit would. Last thing I need is for the four corners to get squirrely on me while I am trying to clamp them all up. Have also used this type of corner on Blanket/Hope Chests.

Alignment! Something I hadn't considered.
