I continually need a marking gauge and mine is still buried in a box in the basement. So I decided to make one.

Great to make your own tools! The pin limits the extension and keeps the slider in it's dado; by the same token, the guide piece could have been deeper to keep the slider fully in it's dado for better control for close marking. It comes down to how much dado is needed but it would look more appropriate especially when most marks are close. A brass washer under the knob would mitigate the wear and compression on the sides of the groove, inlaid brass strips either side would be the ultimate!

I like that too. Now I want to build one just like it. Except I don't have any Koa - I hope it's legal to use ebony. :)

One question, what did you use for the scribe pin?
I guess two questions, did you make the knurled thumb screw or find it locally? The brass makes it look great.
