I was just about to throw this piece of cherry in the fire to warm my feet and I noticed a nice feather in the grain. So I ran down to the shop and threw it on the lathe and this is what I found inside. I think I'll set it on the mantel instead. I hope these pics show off the figure ok

That is an outstanding save John:) You are right about the beautiful feather that is in that wood.

What is the size of this wonderful piece of wood.

Great Job John.;)

Thanks Dick...It's 5" Tall and 3" in diameter. I finished it with BLO and some semi-gloss Deft then buffed. I agree. Mother Nature done good on this one.

Yeah Travis...This thing is really nice to sit and stare at. The kids keep wanting to take it to their room!(the proverbial abyss)

Great piece John. I like the way you always run down and throw a block of wood on the lathe and end up with something so wonderful. Your photo composition is always great as well.

Yup. That sure is nice John. And firewood is my favorite species too. Until January that is.

Lovely piece, John. Perfect for the mantle, too...it will help remind it of what it "could have been" if it hadn't cooperated... ;)

Nice smooth lines, and beautiful finish make the simplicity of the piece capture the lovely figure of the wood. If you had done a lot of embellishment it would have taken away from the natural beauty of the wood, great job.

Just can't tell what nature has placed inside a log unless you open it up to see!

Glad you let me see what was there.

Beautiful piece, John. As good as your picture taking skills are though, I doubt very much that the pix do the piece justice. I would really like to see that in person.

BRAVO!!
