Thanks for your opinions
I decided to have a large/ wide rim and remove a reasonable amount and not break through,For now. It's a bit on thick at the rim, but the Art dept ( wife) said "it only has to sit there and look good" Out side is sanded to 220, one coat sanding sealer applied
interior sanded to 320
ill keep sanding and polishing, how fine would you sand. platter to be used for chips and dips, dips in a glass container.
best finish to apply?
bark is not loose but should I use CA on it anyway?
thanks again for your help
i know they are basic questions so don't give too much flack.

Mark the top looks great! I'm primarily a utility turner, and sanding to 320 or 400 grit is plenty. An oil finish is also appropriate for food.

It looks like the foot is a bit small. How are you going to reverse hold it for taking off the tenon? You may be able to shape the bottom some more to make a bigger base. I make platters with a base that is at least 65%-75% of the diameter.

One other design consideration is to make the bottom profile match the top. So with a wide rim you can cut the bottom "rim" to match. This gives the piece a lighter feel if the rim is thinner where your hands pick it up.
