Hello everyone I'm giving green wood turning a go for the first time; I found this piece of wood in the forest where we were camping last week not sure how long it was there after the cut down the tree. There were many pieces lying about for campers to use as fire wood but I could tell it was still green, this piece looked as if it had some character so I thought I would give it a go. I started on Tuesday and here is what she looks like now, it still on the chuck drying slowly in the house w/ several coats of Tung oil on the out side. She finished at 7" x 7"

If you ever get tired of working with such bland looking timber, just let me know. I know of good bland wood recycling center near me. Sweet looking piece Bruce, good job.

I put the final finish on this piece today; it ended up w/ two checks and is no longer round it's now oblong, I kept it sorta natural w/ a Tung oli finish.

Certainly an interesting piece with its different color shades and grain patterns. Nice save Bruce

Welcome to the world of turning green wood. Unless steps are taken almost every piece will check and go oval.
It's still a nice piece though, great job.

Nice find and nice turning. I''ve never really given oak a go, how does it turn? I suppose green is obviously much easier than the dry stuff.

Thank you Daryl and David....Adam I can't say for sure this is the first GREEN piece that I have ever turned: I can tell you this was tough because of the knot at the base of this piece, I was getting a catch just about on every cut.

nice work (wood is pretty also). Fresh red oak is great for hollow forms with organic character, the warping is a feature IMO.
