I've had a good bit of success with my lazy process of spalting wood. I leave the logs about 3' long and set them on end in the dirt leaning up against the house and forget about them for about six months. I lop off about 5" from each end when I process them, and usually I'm pleased with the resulting roughed-out bowls. I was especially happy with the way this gum turned out. These are sisters from a crotch piece, about 10' dia. Caught it with a lot of color before it started getting punky. I wrapped them in several pieces of newspaper and put them on a shelf for a few months to dry out. Another lazy method that works well for me.
