View Full Version : Turnings get biger and biger

If this is where this facination for turning will lead then I'm beat already because I don't have the legs for it. If you have seen this already, forgive me please but if you haven't then I think it is mind stretcher. I have no more info to go with it, a fellow passed it to me and he had it passed on to him by a friend with no explanation.

Thats a big bowl. Bill Grumbine has some compitition in the big bowl department.

Think of the sand paper!!

That is one big segmented turning! At least I hope it wasn't a solid peice of wood.

I saw something similar to this a while back, where they were using a PTO from a tracter for the lathe.

I'll bet slower then that. If you assume the guy is about 6 ft tall then the bowl would be about 12 feety in diameter. One of my turning books recomends a 6" bowl to be turned at about oh say 1100 RPM then that thing should be turning at about 6 RPM to give you the same surface speed.

I,ve seen that pic somewhere else. I believe the power lathe is a combine.

Are you talking about the tractor? The tractors coming out of CHN are sold undedr the Ford name and are blue(they also own Case/IH). It appears to possible be a White (brand not color) tractor but I'm not possitive.

Chad...I guess I should have put the name in quotes to make it more general. You're correct that there are a number of blue tractors out there! Regardless of the name, it sure is a creative way to turn! Hmm...I wonder what my little Kubota would swing... ;)

Well lets do the math speed == RPM((dia*pi)/60)

So....at a 12' diameter or 144" we get

X = 6((144*pi)/60)
X=45.2389342

This is of course an answer in MPH. So at 6 RPM a 12' dia turns at ~45mph.

(I believe my math is correct but if it's not correct away.)
