Seems I am still finding things is this pile of saw parts....have two "Orphan" handles...haven't found the plates that match....

There were also a few Warranted Superior medallions in the parts tub, both with Eagles. One handle MIGHT be a tad older..
363173
No. 16? Unless the carving has been worn off..
The other?
363174
Does have the carving.....both handle are "open top" not cover top. Holes do not line up with each other's #2 bolt hole...

I also found this red handle..

It claims to be an Atkins. Holes match this plate..

8 ppi skew. IF this be an Atkins, which model? I need to clean the plate up, when I get a bit of time this week.

As for the other two handles? Any ideas?

The first one looks like either a Sargent No.29 or a No.128, these two were made without any carving in the handles. I can't tell what the second one is. It doesn't have that little drop in the bottom of the inside of the handle like the others. That's all I got.

What was your process for cleaning up the steel? Would your process remove the manufacturers etching?

150 grit sandpaper in a palmsander, weight of the sander only. Did not seem to bother the etch. I even found the "8" stamp down by the handle.

When I get a bit of time, later, I will try a shot of Gun Blue Paste, and sand again. Usually that brings out the etch a bit better...

According to the freshly brought up etch....saw has a No. 59 stamped in the etch.....

Plate is 24" long, is stamped as an 8 pointer.

Etch includes a couple of lines of script to the right of the main etch. Little hard to read.

May send it out for a proper sharpening.....along with that Disston #090 I also have rehabbed.

I have also taken absolute junk saw plates and de-rusted, shorten'd, filed new tooth line and sharpened them. Then make a new handle and use salvaged saw nuts to make a functioning saw.

I did it because I could.:)

Try it, it's fun. I have salvaged saw nuts and medallions that I use. It is neat to make a handle from sapele or curly maple.

I may just send you this stack of leftover plates......too bent up for me to bother with...

However..these two handles I may keep around awhile...the rest?

Meh......Red was a newer WS.....maybe a D-23 clone.

Right now, I am tackling Pop Wood's http://www.popularwoodworking.com/jun17/modern-lounge-chair.

I'm using good old Texas mesquite for the wood.
