Hello,

Here is the piece of figured maple that I was working on at Ray's place. I'll try to add a profile shot as soon as I can get a good one. :)

It's about 7" x 1-3/4"

Best wishes,
Dave

Dave,

It blows my mind how you guys and gals can hollow something like that out through such a little hole. Kind of like the ship in the bottle!

It was amazing! I watched how he...CENSORED...then he put the two...CENSORED...then finished it. Totally amazing!

Looks like Dave went and hacked my post. Guess he didn't want me to tell you guys how he did it!

Okay, I'll tell.

Here's the first one I did a few years ago. (A little the worse for wear after a couple of rough moves, but it was never as attractive as Jason's.)

<IMG SRC="http://www3.telus.net/GLI/top.jpg">
<BR>
<IMG SRC="http://www3.telus.net/GLI/edge.jpg">

The main trick is to use a bandsaw to cut the blank in half like a sandwich, hollow out the interior, and glue it back together again.

As you can't see, the joint is invisible.

However, there are several subsidiary tricks. It helps to have a lot of contrasty grain, and wenge is great for this. However, an even better trick is to ensure that the joint is actually below the outer edge, i.e. just under the curve where it doesn't catch the eye. And finally, after you make the cut, do NOT be tempted to turn the edges smooth on the lathe. It's important to glue it back together with the grain perfectly registered, and you'd lose that ability if you remove any material. Besides, the original cut helps you to achieve this registration easily, because it will be imperfect.

Sorry, Jason.

Cheers, Garrett

Dave, Great looking as usual! I have what's left of that board sitting in my wood rack awaiting a proper place to highlight it! Maybe a box lid or something. Definitly not a turning cause I don't do round WWing! I don't suppose you'll be able to make it to my "Pond Voyage - Fade to black" Party on March 1st??? Love to see you come!

Dave, Every time I see one of your pieces it reminds me how bad I am at turning. It also motivates me to play with my lathe a little more. This vessel looks really nice.

Hi Bob,

I really wasn't trying to fool anybody, I have posted a couple of these on the Pond with an explanation. I guess I should have added it here too!!:)

They are fun to do and a great use for all the 4/4 lumber I have laying around.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Mac,

Man, I would love to be there, but finances will allow only one trip for me. I hope to see you at Ray's in April.

But please.... take lots of pics...

That thing really turned out great! I think I'm going to give that piece of maple you gave me a shot and I'll bring it up to Rays and show it to ya'. Hopefully I'll have better results than the first try.

Looking forward to the get together in April.

Kurt

BTW...are you hugging that lathe in your Avatar?????

I looked all over for a scrap of that maple after the party, but didn't find so much as a chip. Now I know where to look.

Thanks Kurt,

Looking forward to it, It should be a great way to say goodbye to a great forum, and hello to a new one.

After all that has been said, I do believe that change is good for us all. It is sometimes painful, but in the end, it makes us stronger. There were probably hundreds of lurkers that read the Pond, but never posted. I hope that they will all jump right in and feel like they are part of a new beginning.

Off soapbox now.. :)

David

P.S. Yes... I have a love affair with my lathe that is illegal in 37 states... :)

Well, I'm glad you fessed up, however I would not be surprised if you turners had some cool new tool to accomplish hollowing such a vessel from a solid piece. Never thought you would resort to smoke and mirrors. :D

Its still a great looking piece!

Thanks for the warning Ray, I'll be sure to hide it before the Pond Voyage Party!

Hey Ray...

You know...I had to wrestle a little piece of that maple from Mac "the scavenger":D :D

Poor Dave, I asked him for a piece early in the day and by the end he had forgotten to remember when Mac asked for the piece...luckily Mac is a class guy and let me have the top 18".

BTW did Lynne take that pic of you when you were in a bad mood?? I've seen you with a much happier mug!!! Oh well..I know the real you.....and let me just state to fellow "creekers"...Ray is not as mean as he looks!!!

Looking forward to April.

Dave,
Very nicely done!
Am I correct in assuming that this was done in two halfs?

Or was it made from two thinner pices of 4/4 wood, glued together, then hollowed?

I tend to save larger, figured pieces of lumber I have milled with a mind towrds turning them later. This piece gives me some ideas for those "scraps"

yet another nice one Dave! I never tire of these...I really should make another one. They are so fun :)
Thanks to you......I now know how...say that ten times fast :D

Hi Dom,

Yes, I do them in two halfs and them glue them together. It is a great way to use up all the great small pieces of wood I can't bring myself to throw out.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi RJ,

That's funny you should mention that. One of the first ones I made was posted over on the pond. I think it was Bill Grumbine that made the same comment. I ended up donating it to the Woodturning Center in Philly for a fund raiser. They asked for the name of the piece, and that is what I gave it.

Here's a link to the picture...
