View Full Version : Belt oil

Went in a swimming pool for a couple hours, two days ago with my belt on. Now that it is dry, it is a bit stiff. I haven't had any neats foot oil since the JFK administration, but would like to oil the back side of the leather anyway.

I do have mineral oil. Any thoughts on whether that would work well? I am afraid if I use the wrong oil, it will never dry properly. It is nothing special, just a leather Carhart belt.

Thanks,
Rick

Neats foot oil is available from Amazon. Probably also saddle shops would carry it

I use Obenauf's Leather Preservative, it's main claim is it does not cause leather to stretch as it replenishes leather goods. I've used it on work boots mostly and have been satisfied.

Ballistol will fix it right up.

I use it on both my guns and holsters as a cleaner/preservative.
It won't stain & it's 100% non-toxic.

I have used Neatsfoot since forever. Available around here at any Boot Barn or like store. I do use Obernauf's for boots and work gear but, Neatsfoot is fine for casual clothing IMHO. I have sandals that are 15 years old and stomped through rivers in the Caribbean and deserts in California with only Neatsfoot treatments.

When I had a pair of leather sandals made many years ago the leathersmith gave me a bottle of lanolin to restore the leather after getting wet or rough.

We use Lexol leather conditioner for all leather horse tack (saddles, straps, reins). I do keep neatsfoot oil but I think this is better. Available from most farm stores, Amazon, etc.
