Dust/Chip Canister

I recently refurbed a Ridgid planer and it works pretty good. Problem I have now is the 5 gallon Thien separator I used for my table saw isn't any where big enough for planing.

If I build a Tien separator for a 20 gallon steel garbage can will it handle the suction from my shop vac?

Eventually I'd like to get a 2 hp Harbor Freight collector, but it's not in the budget right now.

I used a Thien separator on a 45 gallon (imperial) drum for a DeWalt dw733 with a large Sears shop vac for years. Worked very well.
