Hi all,

I have an older Fein vacuum / dust extractor (9.55.13). The sound proofing foam has deteriorated and is blowing out the exhaust on top. This creates a mess, and also suggests that the sound is not being dampened as designed.

Unfortunately, Fein has discontinued the sound proofing foam parts. I have searched & called around and nobody seems to have spares. I even called Fein's repair shop hoping that they might have some, but they said it's been years.

I'm considering trying to replace the foam myself, but am unsure of what kind of foam to source and where to get it from.

Has anybody else attempted a repair of their old Fein vacuum's foam soundproofing? Any advice would be appreciated!

You might try some place like Silent Source; https://silentsource.com/acoustic_product_types/acoustical-foams/ They have tons of different materials to chose from.

I had exactly the same situation. I was able to find acoustic foam on Ebay that had adhesive on one side. Only one piece of the original foam was intact to be used as a pattern. The other pieces I had to kind of make it up as I went along. The foam seems to be responsible for a large percentage of the noise reduction. I ran the Fein a little without the foam just to see the difference and it didn't seem much quieter than something like a Ridgid.

I don't recall the source of the foam beyond Ebay. The Fein foam is pretty thin, what I bought was thicker but things went together without forcing. It might also be possible to 'resaw' foam on a bandsaw with fine toothed blade. I didn't try with the acoustic foam but did so successfully with some fairly dense upholstery foam.
