What can you tell me about an E.C. Stearns & Co. #85?

Appears to be some sort of marking gauge? Has one edge polished up, with a scale stamped into it.

If they are cutters( yes, two) how does one sharpen them?

Just got home a few hours ago....will try for pictures tomorrow...

( along with a Stanley #8, a Millers Falls No. 11, and a small, 6" sweep brace.....was a very good weekend..:D)

What can you tell me about an E.C. Stearns & Co. #85?

Appears to be some sort of marking gauge? Has one edge polished up, with a scale stamped into it.

It is a butt gauge for laying out hinge gains or AKA hinge mortices.

Brought home this 1/2 truck load of Maple and Poplar stuff.....other 1/2 went to the driver...need to see what I can do with this hoard...

Keyhole..compass....blade has no point. Haven't decided on the "handle" just yet...snuck in with the rest of the Mutts...

I'm assuming this has been said many times before, and don't take this the wrong way, but I hate you Steven C Newman...in my area (North Alabama), we don't have anywhere to find good stuff like you seem to bring home weekly! There's one "antique" store that has a very good tool selection in it, but everything is way overpriced and some of it not even users yet...however, I still go in there and have actually taken stuff to the counter to purchase to only stop halfway and return it...

According to Hyperkitten...the Stanley No. 8 appears to be a type 7. Frog has been repaired, as well...

Also, in the box of parts I brought home....there were a few plane irons...

Not sure what I will be doing with these.....not sure IF my chipbreaker bolts have the reach to go through these, and engage the chipbreaker's threads...

Superb haul! And, I'm glad to see someone else amassing all the old handsaws. The temptation is overwhelming for just one more--well, maybe two....

+1 on what Archie said. Super cool haul both of tools and lumber! Especially cool that you have parts of the #8, I love it! Ya did good!

Take a photo or two when you get them restored, especially the #8. In my view, any #8 is a find!

Stanley No. 8, type 7 is now making shavings....As is the Millers Falls No.11, type 1. A Craftsman #3C bb donated a iron and chipbreaker to the No. 11. Millers Falls made both the iron and the chipbreaker, and the plane is the same as a Millers Falls No. 8 (Size #3)

Maybe tomorrow, I can start on either the Pantry Cupboard's doors, or process down a stack of saws....still have two I need to rehab.

have to try and sort through the stack of "Good" lumber, and see just what all there is.

A quick glance through half of the wood pile......counted at least 5 Cherry boards @ 4/4 x 8" x 6'.....might be able to make something out of those. A slab of 6/4 Maple....by 12" wide. Maybe 4' long.....leg stock? There is a lot of 1 x 6 x6' Maple, and a bunch of 1/2 x 6 x 6' Poplar. Along with some 4/4 Poplar. Might be a project or two in there...somewhere?

Saws have been "processed" down. Two very good plates, and the handles to match. Have a tall stack of "Spare" handles, now. ALL the bolts and medallions are soaking in Simple Green, until I can finish cleaning them up.

Planes have been rehabbed to working condition. Brace is cleaned up, and ready for work.

Well, there is always tomorrow's Rust Hunt...a little bit closer, this time....:rolleyes:
