OK, I am slow; I just realized that the saw was "cut down", as you indeed stated. I had considered cutting one down, but I was never sure how to do it and did not know if that would affect the temper.

Andrew
I don't know how it was cut, but it works real well and theirs know way to know about the temper.

I just cut one saw down a little while back. Took about 4" off a saw. I ground a "line" across the plate where I want it to be "cut" . Then hold the smaller part in the vise right at the line. Then snap the piece off. A bit of CAREFUL work with the grinder again, to refine the cut end. Used plenty of water to dunk the area in.

Wear gloves when you go to snap the line.....teeth tend to be sharp....

Diston D8 and a Warranted Superior
Atlas Tool Co square
6C 5, 4 and a Keen Kutter adj throat
Yankee North Bros. 130A also North Bros. eggbeater 1431A

Thanks Steven, was waiting for a rainy day to clean them up, but don't expect any rain till November.

Did you use the one you had?

They'd work. There is a very fragile tab to adjust the iron with.......they will break IF you try to adjust without loosening the cap iron bolt.

I think one of my neighbors has one of those. Is the Shelton a single iron plane?

The blade on my neighbor's plane didn't seem to hold an edge and it was rather chattery.

Jim, the 2 that I have came along with some other planes as a package and reduced the cost of the ones I wanted so not much invested. When you say single iron you mean no chip breaker, correct. I might put them up for sale or just re purpose the furniture as the knob and tote are in very good shape.

Far right #3...Stanley Defiance. Early models.....later ones were more like Handyman plane. I think this is from the 1930s era.

Diamond Edge for the other? lateral level doesn't look like a Millers Falls style. Maybe one from Estes?

Mike Baker 2
06-25-2017, 10:57 PM
Never seen a Defiance. I have one of the Handyman #4s. Decent plane, but nothing like the earlier Stanleys. Sharp blade solves a lot of ills with a plane,I've heard of the Eclipse somewhere.

Good find Rick, I think the #5 is later than a type 8. Bailey wasn't added to the casting until type 9. Unless you somehow found a rare prototype.

Thanks Jim and your right the flow cart I used did nit mention Bailey in the casting but it did mention patent dates on the lateral adjuster, so Type 9 it is and I wont complain for 15 bucks!

Thanks Jim and your right the flow cart I used did nit mention Bailey in the casting but it did mention patent dates on the lateral adjuster, so Type 9 it is and I wont complain for 15 bucks!

Some of the early type 9 planes still have a patent date on the adjusters. They should also have two '02 patent dates on the base casting.

Here is an old post of mine that is likely just as confusing and erroneous as anything else out there:

http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=140103&d=1264735941&thumb=1This the same frog that I have on my plane.
It is my understanding that when they came out with a new type the used all the parts that fit from inventory.

I saw these when I first got there and decided if he still had them on the way out I'd make an offer and they followed me home.
363964Marked C.T. CO there is a circle logo but I'm unable to make out what.

Nothing really exciting but I just couldn't pass up the laminate trimmer NIB for 10$, still have the one I bought in 1986 and have not used since 1990, but I do plug it in to see if still works. The molding plane is from Auburn Tool Auburn NY and they have been out of business for 120 years.

Well it's been some time since there was anything god to post...that all changed today. The crate that the planes were in had 16 profiles including a double iron
1 1/2'' half round that was in great shape actually all were good and sharp, but reality took hold and I picked the ones that I would use.
365949 2 rusty #4's late model Stanley made in England with black plastic furniture 3$ Hercules/Sargent 1$,
the 4 wooden planes, 1/2'' skewed, 1'' skewed, 1 3/4'' smoother, 1 1/4'' scrub and the 18'' Disston D-20 all for 50$.
Mitutoyo metric 6'' 5$ and the files and bits were a buck each.

Rick Malakoff

Got it cleaned and it appears to be a Disston 18'' D20 with 11 TPI.

The handle has a crack but it's in great condition, clean and sharp so I'm going to leave as is.
