I finally had a chance to turn on my new to me Jet 1642 and decided that I would attempt a square bowl. What an amazing lathe! I decided to practice on a cherry bowl blank that came with the lathe, my practice piece turned out better than I thought. The bowl measures about 11" across and the wings taper down to about an eighth of an inch.

That's really nice looking David. I really like how the lip flows out to the square shape. You did a nice job finishing it too. I know in the flat world of woodworking cherry can be a pain to stain due to blotching. Is that the case with wood turned objects too? I don't see why it wouldn't be but I've never turned and finished any cherry off the lathe.

thank you Adam. For the finish I used three coats of sanding sealer, sanding back between coats. At the third coat the cherry had stopped soaking it in, it was then waxed and buffed by hand. Its not perfect but I really like it.
