I have just about finished wallpapering (with 1/2" baltic birch) a wall (supporting the floor above it where the previous owner built a large stone fireplace) made from 16" x 8" x8" concrete blocks. That wall has a cubby hole that's about 8" high, 5.5" wide, and 9" deep. I'd like to build a little pop-out drawer to fit in there - one that will fit flush at the front but pop out when pushed in. What is the hardware for that kind of thing called and where do you think I can get something that will fit?

Lee valley has drawer slides that would so this, but the shortest one is 10.5" - and since I can't see them without ordering them (the web images are terrible) I don't know if I can cut bits off those; plus they're quite wide and so use up a disproportionate amount of space. Anyone know if they can be cut? or, better.. have a better idea?

First thought is to build a box with a drawer in it out of 1/2'' Baltic birch and make wooden slides, there touch latches on the market you just have to search, but check cabinet hardware dealers.

My experience with that kind of touch latch is not good. They feel cheesy, and break too soon. I've noticed Blum makes one -- https://www.wwhardware.com/blum-tip-on-magnetic-touch-latch-b955. I haven't needed one since I noticed that it, but I plan to try it if I ever do need one.

Jamie that looks much more substantial.

Sorry, could not resist.

Be sure to post some images when you are finished, looking forward to see how this fits together; for example, will you simply attach the drawer runners to the existing sides, or build a box to contain the drawer (and loose some width), etc.

Thanks for the laff, ether way slides or a box in a box you still loose an inch on the sides, it's just a trade off.

These are good if you have the room behind the drawer. Pretty rugged and solid throw even with mechanical slides - one source - http://www.homedecorhardware.com/hf-245-52-403.html?utm_source=googlepepla&utm_medium=adwords&id=47729434878&gclid=CjwKEAjw9MrIBRCr2LPek5-h8U0SJAD3jfht9SeNd4MWjLBfZScxL9_2n9b4MsH60bRXHrqLo pm2_hoCjpjw_wcB

Ordered two - $15.42 plus $21.01 for postage to Canada..

These look even better than the blums for this job. Many thanks!
