The shot was taken inside the outer hull or "Ama" of a 46' Cross designed trimaran. The Ama's have very small hatches that allow access for inspection. This is one of the speedier tri's I've inspected. It reportedly holds the San Francisco to Catalina Island sailing speed record.

The hulls are double diagonal planked with red cedar andcover over externall with fiberglasss. Internal frames are plywood on either side of cedar frames with cedar longitudinals. The longitunidals are full length with long tapered/glued scarfs.

The plank layers are glued with epoxy. Internally the plank to frame joint has a "fillet" of epoxy to provide additional bearing surface.

This type of construction provides a large number of components with small scantlings (dimensions) and ultimately a very light vessel. This 46' x 30' wide boat weights less than 10,000 lbs.

Cheers,

Kent

That derrick in the background makes me think this is in Sausalito

Andy you are correct.

That crane is at Myron Spauldings yard in Sausalito, Ca. Quite a challenge to haul a 30' wide boat with slings!!
