Any body have any idea how far the blades are set above the cutter wheel,on a delta DC 380 planer.The book doesn't say,and the guage wont stay put in order to be accurate. HELP!!!!!!!!!!:confused:

Every maker is different and many factors factor into this figure. All to often, you never see this spec published.

But for most larger machines, the rule of thumb is that the cutting circle is 3/32 in above the cutter cylinder. Of course that is dependent on the thickness of the knives used and the diameter of the cylinder. I would personally *NOT* like to go over 1/8 in. These figures assume a knife thickness of 1/8 in. The thinner the knife, the more fragile they become and to high a setting can snap them off.

Also, to high a setting increases the roar known as windage noise. Whatever height you use, make sure that the distance of the bevel on the knife is completely above the cylinder. Never have a portion of your bevel face below grade on the cutter cylinder.
